| #1luixFeb 19, 2012 21:32:47 | I'm looking for some opionions on this matter here. In the campaign I am in, I found a pretty nice weapon, and among the many features it had (if I totaled it right, over +15 for just enchantments) it has Flamming AND Flamming burst. Recently, when rewriting on new sheets to tidy up, I went into the DM guide and looked the spells out to make sure I had written the correct stats down. Flaming was simple enough, +1d6 bonus fire damage on hits. However, the big question is Flaming Burst. The part I fully understand is +1d10 fire damage on succesful crits. However, does it also deal 1d6 bonus fire damage on regular hits IN ADDITON to flamings 1d6, or does it only do the 1d6 damage if flaming isn't all ready on the weapon? I know in the end, it's the DM's choice (He has made personal modifications to some enchantments, such as Vorpal being a sort of "perfect hit" on crits, allowing it to be on more weapons, as aposed to beheading, and passes through Heavy Fortification, much to my dismay.) but my DM is also willing to haggle on some of the specifics if a good argument is made. I can't determine if it would be appropriate for it to stack that with flammings 1d6 fire damage as well. |

There is literally no reason for a weapon to have both. In any event, you will get +1d6 fire damage on any hit, and +1d10 more fire damage on a critical hit. |

I was just curious as to opinions on whether the 1d6 from flamming would stack with the 1d6 from flamming burst (so in short, 2d6 fire damage a hit as apposed to 1d6 per hit) |

The flaming enchantment is overridden by the flaming burst enchantment. You get +1d6 on regular hits (if the flaming effect is active) and +1d10 more on critical hits. |

Fortification doesn't do anything against it, because it works on crits, not "natural 20's". It gets confusing because it states you still have to roll a second dice to confirm the crit hit, but the Vorpal itself is just an effect on top of that. The ultimate proof of this is that it mentions several creature types (such as undead) that are immune to critical hits, but can still have their heads slashed off by this weapon. Most undead don't die from the loss of a head, true, but the fact remains that the ability functions independently of their crit immunity. If you somehow survived the beheading and have fortification, you'd be allowed to roll fortification after the beheading to resist the rest of the crit damage, though. |
