| #1chanter_houndJan 29, 2011 23:10:16 | So I was told in my recent game that i should replace my dead character with a damage dealer. And I did. Holy crap i did. Normally I make a character who is mostly versitile and can do a number of things. This time I made a character who only had one thing on his mind. Killing things and then serving them in the local soup kitchen for charity. (even though he is lawful evil.) I made a totemist, from Magic of the Incarnum. And was like "I want to make a character who can do crazy amounts of damage while using only natural attacks." I found one "spell" that allows me to increase the damage of all bite attacks by+2 and all other natural weapons by +1, while reducing my ability to hit with natural weapons by -1. And it could go up further. Another spell gave me 2 bite attacks and a gore attack, so long as I gave up a magic item slot for them. Only level 2 so hell yeah! Last one gives me 1hp per level and the ability to spend points to increase my natural AC. With a feat, I gained 2 claw attack and a bite, and will soon have a tail attack with another set of feats. So here I am, 3 bite attacks, 2 claws and 1 gore as a full round action, as a level 2 character. I one shot everything. Which is nice, since my past few characters got oneshotted by everything, and this one could as well. |

So you'll have the gore attack, a bite, and two claws, as well as your tail later. As a side note, have you used incarnum before? 'Cus it seems like you might be confusing things around here. |
| #3chanter_houndJan 30, 2011 10:41:28 | Nope not confusing most of it. "As a full attack action, you can attack with all three heads, applying your full Strength modifier on all three damage rolls." The Totemist's purpose is to mimic magical beasts, and in this case the "spell" is a chimera. Essentially, with this set up I have, when I do a full round attack, I do a full round attack of a chimra. (My feat gives me the claw attacks) but at my BAB, and at a lesser amount of damage. Now I've gotten my DM to agree with me though on something, and thats the head should "replace" my own head instead of floating there, thus losing my own bite. And so I was getting a little extra damage there that I shouldn't be getting. Unfortantly, when I'm in this set up I'm pretty much all battle, no skill. |
| #4brassbaboonJan 30, 2011 15:43:08 | Ug. If you are interpreting the book correctly, as a DM I'd ban that book so fast your head would spin. Geez! |
| #5EisenritterJan 30, 2011 16:15:52 | Okay, so. I suppose my next question should be, do you have enough essentia to afford all those attacks? Keeping in mind that you have a hard limit as to how much essentia you can invest in each soulmeld*? Or, for that matter, that you can only have one soulmeld occupying each slot and that you only gain the benefit listed for the slot that soulmeld is occupying? |
| #6chanter_houndJan 30, 2011 16:56:45 | Well if I remember correctly, you pretty much ban every book. And if you were my DM.. you would probally tell me to pick vow of proverty, nah force it on to me, as the joke of the table is normally my chacters can only do 1 point of damage through an entire campaign Part of the power of the class relies on giving up magic items in the process. So while it sounds duper powerful, in a fairly high magic campain, I'm slowly going to be losing magic item slots or class abilities. Also because I have to "equip" the spells at the start of the day, like a wizard prepares his spells, and i cannot change them unless i go through the wizard's prepare ritual again, I lose modability. In otherwords, If I pretty much change through "modes" where i'm either an attack form or in a support form. |

Chimera doesn't need essentia to operate. It only needs to be bound to the totem chakra. I do have a point invested in it, but only because I don't have room for the Totem soulmeld and I don't want to hurt my AB with my dread carapiece. If I remember correctly (I don't have character right infront of me) Chimera is on the soul slot (armor) Dread is on the heart slot (****) and Totem was on something like foot slot. Claws again are from feat, so I niether need to bind nor invest. |

Only the splat books that create absurdly overpowered characters like yours. Also I ban individual items that do the same thing, like the doodads that let a druid's magic items work in wild shape. I don't mind if there's a certain level of imbalance in the game, but a three-headed chimera with three head attacks and two claw attacks at second level? Not gonna happen in my worlds. I don't care what book it comes out of. What's the rest of the party do while you rip the enemies to shreds? Eat popcorn? Never mind. If your DM and party are fine with this, my opinion doesn't mean anything. Play how you like. Have fun. |

And then cast a buff on me or swing a whip around. Which is better than what happens to me when they are doing a skill challange, as I'm pretty much useless. Our true namer can make the most amazing knowledge checks and speaches. Our bard can sing (she gets to play two bards infact each with thier own personality.) We actually had an hour and a half at least, dedicated to these two doing thier things, what with my previous skill monkey character's death and the sudden loss of our party's damage dealers. meanwhile combat is never fully about me. Our party consits of.. Kobold Druid. Human bard who uses a whip Kalaster Truenamer. then me, the Lupin Totemist. And usually, I'm the weakest link character. Hence the reason I died earlier. Besides if it was up to me, I'd be playing a jester, but we've already got enough buff in the party. I can easily make the worst puns you've ever heard. Edit: Okay. I'll continue my search then to make absolute certian the DM and I didn't get anything wrong with this character. |

...Carry on, then. Something just felt really weird about that list of attacks, was all. ![]() |
| #11chanter_houndJan 31, 2011 22:03:11 | Don't worry, my DM and I have been trying to figure out what it is rated low in the totemists handbooks. Only thing we can figure out is that people are wierd. |
| #12chaosturtleFeb 01, 2011 10:25:28 | I apologize if this sounds rude since tone can't be conveyed well over the internet, but I'm sincerely asking is there a question in there? Is this just a general "here's what you can do with Incarnum" post, or are you making sure that you did everything correctly? If its the latter I'd ask which feats you took for the other natural attacks. The only other thing I'd suggest is making sure you're doing your natural weapons correctly as I noted you didn't mention taking multi attack which I imagine would be pretty high on your list as a -5 AB on all your other attacks is a pretty big penatly at level 2. www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Natural_Weapon |
| #13chanter_houndFeb 01, 2011 10:50:49 | It is a making sure I did everything right. The feats I took are Tooth and Nail: a feat in a Big book of feats, we have that has a couple hundred feats for the 3.x system. To take this feat, I took the Beastial flaw from one of the last few dragons. (-2 to all attacks that are not a natural attack or unarmed strike) Multi-attack was taken, and the flaw No time for book learning was taken to get it. (always illiterate, -2 to all knowledge checks except nature) And the last one I took was dragon touched so I could use the draconic meldshapes. We have henceforth determined that using the chakra bind causes a "shapeshifting" effect, that replaces my real head with the chimera heads. So i lose my own bite, but gain 2 more and a gore. And most everything else looks like it is good now, except for a few wondering things.. namly if the chimera is placed on the crown slot, and bound to the totem.. 1) Can I also bind the chimera to the crown? 2) Can I wear a helm if it isn't bound to the crown? 3) If i took the feat that allows monsterous creatures with multiple bodyparts wear multiple magic items for that slot, would I be able to wear two helms while the chimera is bound to the totem but not to my crown slot? |
