| #1BareeJan 10, 2009 10:04:34 | As I said in previous threads, I'm a relative new and a bit inexperienced player. In one the two campaigns I currently play the adventuring takes place around a single city which contains uncountable portals to other places/planes/dimensions etc. Apparently its lead by one "Lady of Shadows". In this city are also two arena's. One is a simple "battle to the death, winner takes all" deal. The other is owned and regulated by faeries. In this latter arena I signed up for a "match", and to make a long story short, the way to win was simply to say/think/decide you had won. Or something, I'm still not entirely sure what teh deal was. Everything you did or want in this dimension or whatever it was, happened. I think. In my case, this lead to an old man I dragged along for most of the match who could make anything I wanted. I had a lot of fun with him, but one of the things I asked him for, and I don't recall what I said exactly, was a weapon "That could easily kill anything" or something along those lines. He presented me with a club. After the match (which I lost to a panda by the way, because I rode it over the finish line and its head came over first...) I still had a lot of the stuff the guy made for me, including the club. I already had one of our party members cast "detect magic" on it. He couldn't find any magic, but he did sense there was something. Well, after hearing the other players and the DM discuss a bit about what it might do (Is it very heavy? No? then its probably not depleted uranium. Maybe it will create a nuclear explosion? Or a black hole? Etc.) I'm a bit like "Uhhhh.... K.... I am not sure if I want to hit anything with this?" Now, in our last session, we followed the trail of some robbers who had killed a small family, killed them, interrogated one to discover their hideout, killed him and killed three more at the hideout. After this, a seemingly very powerful NPC lands on some sort of giant reptile dragon-like mount (I couldn't get the DM to say whether or not it was actually a dragon), walks in, asks us what we are doing there and explains the robbers worked for him. He then proceeds to take about 40% of our loot from a chest in the hideout and instructs us to be gone the next morning when he will arrange for a new band of robbers to arrive. Err... Ok? So anyway, I am pondering the possibility the DM set this up in order to get me to use that club. One of the items I got from the faerie thing was a ring that allowed me to fly a cessna like an ace pilot. It also gives me a +2 on flying any flying mount. Well, nice as this would have been, I am not sure if I want to risk that club in order to get it. However, if every other fight some very powerful npc drops by to take part of our loot... Part of me fears that the club might do something that kills everything in a certain radius, including myself. However, it seems unlikely with the DM in question, I'd doubt he'd be that mean. Another possibility is that its very powerful, but is one use, in which case I might want to save it for a really powerful foe. Of course, it might also do nothing or anything between. I kind of lack the experience to really know and/or understand what the possibilities are for this club. At the moment I am having a blacksmith create some kind of contraption that allows me to keep the weapon in a compartment on my arm or something (I play a warforged) and with some sort of mechanism allowing me to take it in my hand as a free action. The DM allowed it, but said it would take time for the Blacksmith to create. I figured if nothing else it could be a last resort thing, that I might use in a situation that is utterly hopeless and where it is obvious I am going to die. So, anyway, any thoughts? EDIT: In response to the post below, this campaign was originally set up to allow for one session adventures when the DM for the other campaign was unable to come, which happened a lot. At the start you could basically choose any character with any build etc from any of the D&D books. However, if I have to name an edition I'd say 3.5 |

It sounds like you're in Sigil, and the Lady you refer to is The Lady Of Pain, which means it might be 2nd Ed or 4th Ed. |
| #3RamienJan 10, 2009 12:05:55 | Just speculation here, but I'd imagine it's a club that does all of two/three things: bypass damage reduction/resistance of all sorts, negate any specific conditions that are required to kill a particular creature, and either stops regeneration or does lethal damage to creatuers that regenerate (depending on your edition). Other than that, no +'s to hit or damage, just a piece of wood that you can hit anything with. |

There's all sorts of possibilities, and the only real way to anticipate what happens is by personally knowing the DM's way of doing things or relying on NPC help with research (or really high Knowledge checks). Maybe "it can kill anything" means you have to just have to beat something to death with it. Maybe it kills what you hit in one blow, and you also. Personally I wouldn't have kept it that long. From a game consideration, if you chuck it, your future adventures can't be based on whether you own it or not, because you don't and the game would have to stop. If you need it for something later, there will be a reason for it to come back into your hands. I'd give it back to the faeries. |
| #5sallaJan 10, 2009 21:51:29 | Just have someone cast Identify on the thing. If it doesn't work, it's an artifact, which means it'll just take some more research. |
| #6saintkeeleonJan 11, 2009 8:58:07 | Just whack somethin' with it! In the words of Jake Chambers "There are other worlds than this". Besides that, most DMs aren't going totally destroy what they took so long to create. Just have some fun! |
| #7KruskJan 12, 2009 0:21:26 | It sounds to me like 3.5 edition wish spell in disguise. Don't know about edition, but I'd guess 3.5. The DM gave you wishes, and you wished for something off the pre-approved list in the PHB of what wish can and cannot grant. In 3.5, this gave the wish spell the ability to do whatever the closest thing the DM could think of. (usually this ended with devistating results for the person making the wish) A weapon that can kill anything, is not on the list of pre-approved wishes, and so that left the DM to choose how to do it. IE twist your wish in a funny, ironic, silly, mean, cool, cruel, or whatever manner. Easy is a relative word. What is easy for a giant to lift is not easy for you. (what is easy for a god to kill is not easy for you) My guess for yours is that indeed this club can kill anything. Just not in one hit, and you probably have to swing it pretty hard, or be a god wielding it. Of course this rock can kill anything, given enough force, swings, or divine power. (you got yourself a non magic club). |
| #8BareeJan 15, 2009 6:28:13 | Yeah, something like that is what I am fearing and what seems most logical. Wouldn't do if I were to hit a dragon with it, only for it to look at me funny and slash me in half. However, there was something different about it, so its not a normal club, we already established that. |

Wouldn't do if I were to hit a dragon with it, only for it to look at me funny and slash me in half. Maybe it can also turn dirt into sand? or some other relativly useless power in addition. Just enough so it reisters as magical, but is otherwise useless. |
| #10the_black_handJan 17, 2009 8:09:47 | Use it on something weak first.. Then on something a little stronger .. then a little stronger ... Never actually trust it to work, have a back up plan. Be ready for something really really really bad to happen too.. |
| #11oynazJan 21, 2009 5:23:48 | Of course you do. No matter what happens when you use it it will be fun. |
