Example: The DM put a Major Character (TPK) in order to give us some insight, lore on our quest and to fluff the story a little...He didn't realy think that we would engage the guy...We didn't intend to until the Paly blew a fuse and decided that seing the guy kill 2 "Crimanals" was to much and against his convictions, so he decided to jump on him without further thought of the consequences... The other party members kinda followed by loyalty, thinking that we could probably convince him to back down after a couple of rounds of getting bashed on...But he is so stubern that he wants to fight the TPK just for honor... says his dogma doesn't permit him to back down from a fight...bla! bla! bla! We know that we can backout and leave the paly to get killed, but he is a main part of the story line ATM, has a bunch of relics needed for the upcomming quests...We tried to reason with him, but seems to be stuckup and not wanting to back down...Saying he will play his paly like he feels fit. He doesn't mind dying... My characters a Priest of Moradin and made a vow to protect the stupid fanatic paly (long story...Kinda of regret it now...) so roleplaying I can't let him die without a fight. I know my char will probaly go down with him, unfortuanatly.... DM said because of this, even if we nock him our and pull out of the fight by force, he will not be able to make a good story line because he is always jumping on anything that doesn't smell just or good....he is all white or black, no greys... so My question is this: Does anyone have any insight, idea, anything to be able to deal with fanatics...Or do we just let him die and kill the whole quest/story at the same time. (Would suck big time...) I don't think that there is any dogma that says : Protect the inicent and die like a fool trying to make a point and be honarable... |

Also, your dwarf can easily let the Paladin kill himself ... after all, you can't protect someone who obviously doesn't want to be protected. |
| #3corvax666Aug 17, 2010 13:14:51 | I could probaly live with the paly being slaughtered...But it will probably end up destroying a my characters main quests that I've being working on for about 12-13 levels...considering my toon is level 16, thats a lot of RP/gaming to throw down the tube because a paly can't control his emotions/temper...![]() We know the DM just can't fix it for us, we need to work it out with the paly...He is throwing the whole campaign down the drain and even the DM is a little pissed. He had put a lot of thought, work in the campaign/plots to just scrap everything on a stupid decision and IMO the players misunderstanding of the paly class/dogma... Wondering what other palies think if this attitude...Is it normal for a paly to recklessly sacrifice his life for something so stupid...can't he just vow to make him pay for it and make a Life quest out of it without losing face in front of his god...? |

Have your DM or one of his closer friends in the campaign pull him aside and explain to him that he's ruining the fun for the rest of you, and is dangerously close to running the campaign in the ground. If he refuses to budge then he's a jerk anyway and I'd ask him to leave the group. Make his Paladin an NPC and rework the story a bit, pass on whatever relics you need to the other characters, and move on. If you can't simply ask him to leave because of personal relationships, you can attempt to deal with it through in game mechanics. Bahamut scorns evil and champions good, and Bahamut is the source of your Paladins powers. Executing criminals isn't something Bahamut is going to frown on. If the offending NPC is a fellow champion of good, have Bahamut strip your Paladin of his powers. If he isn't, set up a series of misunderstandings/gray areas where the Paladin's wreckless behavior results in him killing good entities or taking actions that Bahamut would frown upon. Warn him that Bahamut is displeased with a message from an exarch or the like. If he persists, have Bahamut himself strip him of his powers temporarily or until he completes a redemption quest. If the player is just a very heavy role-player and not a jerk, then he should be willing to change for his deity. Good luck =p |

Because if you've been letting him get away with this stuff for the entire campaign and only now want to change stuff...I think you might have a hard time with that. If this is new then I would just try asking him to tone it down a bit. Beyond that, well, I'd suggest letting him commit suicide and not backing him up. You may have made a vow to protect him, but clearly this guy must be an imposter or doppleganger because the paladin you know wouldn't recklessly attack without at least some hope of victory. That or the pally is obviously so derranged he is a danger to himself and the party so it would be the party's duty to subdue the paladin and get him treated for madness at a temple of Bahamut. |

It's not the first time, he has always been a little drastique with the code...But in the past we have been able to reason/control him... He likes taking the blows and wants to go down sacrificing his life for his companions...I respect that... But knowing that you will take down the whole campaign just for some misplaced pride is a little overboard roleplaying...Take your beating, swallow the pill and come back to fight another day...don't sacrifice you life for a lost cause... Sacrifice his life for a just cause ok...but don't waist it on some uncontrollable emotional outburst... |
| #8Pashalik_MonsAug 17, 2010 15:10:20 | I advise against removing his powers, no matter what your problem with the character or player. Back in 3.5, you could strip a paladin's powers easy, but by 4e rules, you can't. Once the ritual to give him his powers is done, he could go on an innocent killing rampage, and his powers would remain intact. Besides that, it doesn't really address the problem. The problem is the player, who needs to rein it in a bit. It sounds like classic Instigator behavior. When nothing is happening(no fighting) he starts swinging his weapon. Just talk to him. Ask him to tone it down. |
