Dealing with idiotic characters

I should specify before I say this that I have spoken to the DM, and he agrees with me that they are an issue, so I think it's handled, but I would appreciate ideas on what I can do in-character. Or just stories about idiotic PCs.

So in a long-running game, two of the characters are my Monk (formerly a Swordmage, he goes back to 3e and we never had a good class until now), and an NPC Rogue who has helped us out from time to time. Previous characters were an Artificer and a Wizard. The Artificer eventually quit the group and around the same time, a new player joined, and the Wizard died. The Wizard's player decided to just go and make a new character.

The new player has made an Avenger who gets in people's faces and yells a lot. Inspired by this (they knew each other before), the formerly-Wizard player has made a Warden who behaves much the same way.

Apparently they got bored, because while we were looking for a villain dressed in a black cloak, they beat the tar out of an elderly homeless in a similar cloak man and then, upon realizing this, expressed exaggerated regret in an obviously comic way. It's hard to describe in text. The guard then arrived, so they beat up the guard, ran from him and the other guards, the Warden quoting Ice Cube lyrics on the topic of law enforcement, and eventually looped back to the same alley... Where they beat up the same homeless man, having "forgotten" that it wasn't the villain, and said the exact same joke regret lines.

What occurred to me at this point is that it was very out of character for my Monk and the Rogue to not just leave these two morons to eventually get thrown in jail/killed and go search for the villain (who was obviously long gone by this time) in a more constructive fashion. Really, they hadn't even been travelling with us for more than a few days at this point.

The question is, how does one justify remaining in a party with someone who is being an idiot, even if it's far less than these guys were?

I usually write it up to being just a little bit soft on them while I consider talking to the players about the issue.
