Sorry if there's a thread like this anywhere else, I couldn't find one...
Share your weird stories about dice here! In my first game session (ah, now that was epic.) we suddenly realized about halfway through that the dice I brought were rolling much higher than the dice the DM brought. Being players, we instantly began to complain that the DM's dice were "cursed" and rationed out the two sets of dice I brang between us. The DM, noticing our behavior, rolled his d20 three times to prove that it wasn't cursed. He got three ones. A little bit after that, he started using my dice too.

My dice tend to roll low. So when rolling for monsters I roll normal. When rolling for my DMPC and allied NPCs I put the dice in my plush pig's eyes and smack him across the back off his fuzzy 'lil head to roll (never rolls lower 10 with d20s, 3 with d6s, 4 with d8s, ect.).

I normally play some sort of spellcaster so I generally end up rolling upwards of 10d6 at higher levels. This is where my graphing calculator comes in. I had some weird looks at first, but it is now regularily passed around during the session.

As a physics major and a math minor, I'm not one to believe in luck.

However... my best friend and I had been using this matching set of black and white dice. We were both wizards. We rolled under 10 every roll. Ever.

One session, he forgot the black dice that I use, so I used the DM's green ones.

Straight twenties. I couldn't believe it. The rolls were something like 20, 18, 20, 20, 17, 20, 18, 15, 18. The fifteen was the only miss in the entire encounter, and it didn't matter at that point because we had already won.

Saying that I didn't believe in luck, I switched back to the black ones the next session and rolled remarkably low once again. Resigning, I went back to the green, and rolled 3 natural twenties in a row in a skill challenge, doing what my DM describes as the best Bluff checks he's ever seen in his life.

I swear there's something wrong with those dice... luck doesn't exist...

I have found that rolling the dice certain ways and on certain surfaces give me better rolls.

I can roll my dice on the cover of my PHB all night long and almost never roll below a 10. If switch to rolling on the table with the same roll technique then the dice results will be all over the place.

To me it is all about what the dice is rolled upon and how the dice is rolled. I don't believe the dice itself has much to do with the results.

I have one player in my group that seems to almost never roll below a 15 on a d20. He rolls in plain view too. This is frustrating sometimes as the DM. I almost want to believe he is cheating but their is no possible way he could do so. Well once in a blue moon he well roll like every one else but it seems to be rare.

it was bound to happen to someone somewhere somewhen, it just happened to be me... in front of 1 DM and 3 other Players, i rolled gygaxian stats of 6 18's...

the sheet is framed in my bedroom. I decided to make it a bard.

While not quite that amazing, I was playing a game where stats were gygaxian, and race, class, weapon, and gender were assigned at random. I ended up with a halfling rogue with 21 dexterity who fought with a bolas.

When I DM, every single encounter there's always one monster who has awesome rolls. I don't know how it happens. My gaming group is quite used to it and just plan for one big bad in each battle who needs to be taken down because of his mad luck.

Last session it was a Goblin Black blade, rolled 3 crits during the encounter, and 1 time he didn't roll a crit he naturally rolled crit damage.

On the plus side it has happened for NPC's with the group as well, and usually they are adopted quite nicely into the party. :D

When I play.. it seems taht I roll low-average for combat, and nat 20s for skill checks.

When I DM, I TPK the party with nat 20s every other round =Z. I roll out in the open, so people can see that, yes, Justin rolled a 20 again.

I used to be able to (when playing or dmming) look at a player when he rolled the dice and say "1" as soon as he/she let it go.. and it would be a 1. It happened every time for acouple months... I guess it was like voodoo or something because after awhile people just stopped getting upset by it and it stopped happening.

Was still kinda weird. I don't know if I was commanding the dice to be a 1 or if I just somehow 'knew' it would be a 1.

My rolls ( and to some extent, the rolls of people around me ) have a lot of little circumstances that change things. If my target is a player, rolling a red die will hit almost every time. If I roll dice far enough that I can't easily reach them, they average 14. If getting a natural 1 or natural 20 would make a good story, I usually do. See below

(these rolls from 3.5)
A train rolled a natural 20 to avoid Flaming Sphere. Apparently it hit a penny in the tracks and jumped over the flaming sphere entirely. And it's a Reflex prevents all damage spell.
Natural 20s every time I have said "I b****-slap him"
Lots of Natural 1's or 20's while throwing non-throwing weapons. Like a crossbow or a bastard sword.
My friends' rolls - A critical death while throwing a cork at the bard.
- A critical death on the first roll of the first round of combat against the most powerful monster in the campaign
- Yeah, they critcal hit/fail when throwing non-thrown weapons too.

Oh, and minimum rolls for HP half the time. For everyone.

My NPCs generally start with a few good rolls and then rapidly descend into total suck. It's become a standing joke in our group: when someone has a series of bad rolls, someone chimes in with "Hey, you've got Tim's NPC dice!"

Our first "live" session of D&D4 (as opposed to demo games) was awful. The players all had atrocious luck - at least three of us rolled 1's half a dozen times (each!). And the GM had astonishing luck. His solo dragon breathed on us *five times* in six rounds.

Well Im more of a Math Person / history.

I Beleve in Luck BUT I dis beleve that you can control it and shouldnt relie on it.

I Beleve more that if you Have good luck in something you have Bad Luck in something eles.

Kinda funny that the Math Physcics Guy rolls super Crappy and dosnt beleve in luck even when his dice (DM Dice) Start rolling REALY High.

Hes probly going to go "Well if it dosnt happin 20 times in a row for me im not going to beleve it" Well whatever.

Anyways Ya With Dice I Beleve its more on The type of dice im rolling.

For example with D6's I Roll alot of 1's. BUT I Hardly see any 2 or 3, And i see my more share of 4 5 and 6 So i have Above Adverage. This one time i rolled about 120 Times to compare Result of each dice vs me.

I Got so many 4 5 6 and 1's. With the math i found my adverage was about 4.632 Something whatever.

With D4's I Found i rolled about Adverage. 2.5 was my adverage.

With D8's? I Found i rolled Below Adverage, about 3.41
With D10's I Got about 5.8 slightly above adverage. nothing worth noteing.
D12s? I Got about 7.9 Slightly above adverage but nothing worth noting.

Hears the thing that kinda blew my mind.
The D 20, My D20 I Have did roll alot of 3's 5's 9's After that the most adverage was 10/11 Followed by 15,16,17,18,19 With a few 20's and other numbers. But the following numbers never poped up. 14,12, and 6's.
Which was kinda surprizeing. I Rolled a hella lot more 20's then nat 1s tho which surprized me (Allmost 3 times) The result on that was like 8 vs 3

My adverage came up to be 16.03 With that. I Was happy.

To quote a webcomic:

"Dice are my enemy."
"I thought you said dice were like your children."
"I fail to see a contradiction."

Anyway we have our own little rules. Dice have to land in the dish with the Cthulu bead (A marble we have dubbed the cthulu bead) and come to a stop before they count. Cthulu has both saved us and destroyed us many times. Turning 2s to 20s and vice versa at the last second with a little bump.

Also in one group there is someone who I can only described as stoner to the level of Tommy Chong. He has CRAZY luck. He rolls triple 20s at a rate that is way too high for normal people.

As a player, my dice absolutely hate me. I've had multiple encounters where I couldn't hit a building right in front of me.

As a DM, my dice show their true power. The first session I took over as DM, I rolled natural 20s all over the place. It made the encounter much more interesting.

We always had a joke that if a die landed on a point you got the total of all the sides.

One time someone rolled a die and it landed leaning up against a book, on the point (these were old "crystal" dice that hat clipped-off flat "points"). We carefully removed the book and the die remained in place! Probably the first and only time in history someone rolled 21 on a single d6. :D

Ya, I got 3 damage off a 3.5 whip once that way. Flipped a coin and kinda fumbled it and it rolled around the table for almost a full minute with everyone just watching it... till it stopped... on the edge. We didn't have a rule for that in place already (normally we just reroll dice that aren't clearly on a face) but we all agreed that it was definitely 3 damage.

Cool! I'd love to roll a 30 (3 numbers per side x 4 sides, each number appears 3 times on the die) on a d4. Good story anyway.

To this day, my luckiest d20 is the one I pulled out of my brother's Heroscape game. I don't even think the numbers are arranged the same as on any other d20.

The only dice story I can come up with is between the dm and the two players, each with different dice rolled somthing like 6-7, 20's in a row.

Also our home rule in 3e was if you rolled 3 twenties in a row. So roll a twenty crit roll again 20, again 20. The target that was getting hit was automatically dead! saw some pretty crazy things happend with that. Usually when the three 20s peeked out it was in a crusual moment. Oh ya and it did count for the dm as well who usually rolled the last two 20s out in front of the player so they could watch there character die. It was kind of rude but hey when you kill the bad guy that took 45 mins to create and killed it in 30 seconds I dont have a problem with that.

The funniest dice I've ever seen was during a 3.0 game. We had a halfling wizard in the party who won a drinking contest by rolling 4 natural twenties in a row (he managed to out-drink a Centaur Barbarian!). I believe the odds of 4 natural twenties in a row are one in one hundred sixty thousand.

The next day, we went into a dungeon, and when we sprung a Fear trap he rolled 3 crit fumbles and died after his character fell off a cliff into a pool of molten lava.

We all said that he must have blown all his luck in one go.

Yes! Dice! I had dice long before I had books! I saw them in a hobby shop and thought they were rockin' so I got them. It was only several years later that I realized they actually had a function other than a conversation piece!

I realize as I type this how very stupid that sounds, but hehehe I'm like that. *gives a sheepish grin*

"I am a great believer in luck, I find the harder I work the more of it I have." Thomas Jefferson.

Yeah I don't put much faith in luck, oh there are some dice that I like better than others, but I don't attribute it to luck, flaws in the dice cause some of them to shift the statistics slightly in my favor. Still that's not an exact science and I can still roll ones on them.

That being said I am prone to keeping like 5 d20s on hand and if one of my 'good dice' starts stringing out the low rolls I'll get mad and switch dice.

Its irrational, but meh, it makes me feel better.

So, here we are, the party, after a months-long campaign of torment by the BBEG, finally face him down in his lair. He, backed by threats of havoc by his minions (serious baddies, not 4e "minions") declares that, in the interest of fairness, he'll take single combat with ONE PC. (Lawful evil baddie.)

After some discussion, and much examination of the gear and condition of all PC's, my rogue, bearing short-sword and dagger, steps forward. Maxed out initiative roll... then proceeded to roll not one, but TWO natural 20's, and a "00" on the first crit, which, on this DM's table, was "beheaded."

The DM nearly cried... And, my "crystal blue" dice, which I'd travelled halfway across the country to purchase (no, really, I actually happened to buy 'em on a trip) were banned forever from his future campaigns.

My group got into a fight with a Wizard the was to become a major BBEG in the campaign. After his stoneskin goes down the Paladin deals a bunch of damage and Wiards uses the last of the spells he has to do some good damage. The DM has the BBEG Fly away.Me having the only ranged weapon readied (Short Bow) ask if I can take a couple parting shots the DM says no but a few other PC's point out I'm at maximum range but can still shoot. I need to hit 19 or 20. I roll two dice infront of the DM 19 and 20. 2nd Edition Short bow was d6 and a 20 was double damage so I roll 3d6 again in front of the DM and get 18 damage. Mages goes down.

The DM saw the rolls, unfortunately later he changed his story after a troublemaker PC convinced him that I must have cheated because that was "Impossible to roll without cheating". I quit that group, Mr. Troublemaker would routinely drive away PC's he didn't like or outshone his characters too often. As far as I know Mr. Troublemaker (now 37) still lives with his parents

Dice stories from my groups:

One time (I wasn't there, but heard about it from everyone else, it was before I joined the group), a player got frustrated and angry (can't remember why) and banged his head against the table in front of him. Sadly, there was also a d4 on the table in front of him. He was bleeding from the forehead. It wasn't too bad, but the group called it, "The only DnD related injury they've ever heard of."

I have a bad habit of calling the success or failure of a dice roll after it has left the player's hand, but before the result comes up (sometimes when I'm in the next room over). Usually doing it when the DM rolls or when other players are making important rolls and usually voting against the party. One session in particular, there were a lot of important rolls to predict. I wasn't right about half of them and was about to scrap the practice when the DM pulled me aside after the game and informed me that I had actually been correct about all of the rolls, he'd just fudged them but was amazed at my uncanny accuracy. I just shouldn't predict them when people's lives hang in the balance against them surviving (which is the funnest part).

Lastly, it seems that rolls which devastate half the board (sometimes little kids play with us or dice slip...) always roll a 5 or worse. We tell them it's what they deserve for knocking over 3 minis and shoving an empty pop can off the table.

Had a player once who gamed for about half the session (over 2 hours) inadvertently using a d12 instead of a d20. He was an archer who was one of the party's primary damage dealers, yet was only hitting about half the time. Party was having a pretty rough go of the encounters until he realized what he was doing.

Had another player who needed to make a saving throw by rolling a 4 or higher. He failed on the first try. No problem...he had the cleric luck domain, a luckstone (which I added the ability to reroll a die 1/week to its powers), and five luck points (role-playing rewards we used in the game that also allowed for a re-roll).

On eight attempts at rolling a 4 or higher on a d20, he failed every time.

Our second level paladin has the worst luck ever. It's not uncommon for him to have an insanely high bonus to attacks (+5 base +2 proficiency +2 combat advantage +1 holy implement +3 Furious Smash bonus +(1 or 2) Valiant Strike bonus +1 if he's bloodied = +15 or +16 to hit at only 2nd level). At our last session, he made about 20 attacks and only connected on three of them. We want him to reroll a cleric because he doesn't have to roll to use a lot of healing powers. :P

(1/20)^4 = 1/32 000

It's one in thirty-two thousand.

Also, I have a *strange* ability to predict critical successes and failures. I attribute it to a sample size that I now adamantly refuse to enlarge ;)

Ummm nope. (1/20)^4 != 1/32 000

(1/20)^4 = 1/160 000

My teachers always wanted me to show an excessive amount of work:

I hate to say it but I'm the dice wierdo in my group. I Always keep them on the highest number, I always try and roll the same way on the same surface, I berate other players for their sloppy dice techniques; "But you're not really trying to roll" is often heard from the vicinity of my chair. I match a diffrent color D20 to each new character, I have my black bad guy dice. In our last session I hurled an uncooperative die (my new purple starlock D20) across the room just to show it I would tolerate no messing around. Your either on the team or not on the team. It took two bounces off the walls and came right back to me and ended up behind a desk right next to me. I almost clocked the DM it was a very scary moment. It was freaky. ( a 17). I have yet to use the freezer or microwave but then my dice have never given me cause to.
