Dice rituals/superstition.

Aug 28, 2012 7:10:35 OK so I just started studying religion. and it got me thinking abotut dice rituals and superstition. Mostly I have the impression that DnD are a knowledge seeking and well read. In other words they aren't the type of people you would suspect to be superstitius. I know we do indeed come from all walks of life. But I have a feeling that at least one person around the table have some sort of dice ritual.

So what are they?

I leave all of my die with the 1 facing upwards. I figure if it was just on 1, it wouldn't dare roll two in a row.

I have a similiar habit, but I'm not as thorough. It's less likely to roll two 1s in a row then a 1 and then a 5,say.

I also prefer to use my first d20, from my first Star Wars minis starter set, when possible.

Actually for what its worth, the odds of rolling two ones in a row on purpose are very low. The odds of rolling a 1 on a d20 is 1 in 20. The odds of doing it twice are still 1 in 20, just twice. They are two seperate sets. My method doesn't actually do anything*.

*Technically it may round the sides opposite of the 1's, thus lowering the odds of rolling a 1. For this to have any noticable effect it would have to be done for hundreds of years, but you know whatever.

I let a friend roll for me, because I was making a sandwich--after, I rolled 1's on my to-hit rolls (and we play with Critical Fumbles). His curse transferred to my dice (he's renowned for being the Masochist Monk, because he critically fumbles so much that he beats himself up as much as he beats the enemy).

I have two sets of dice. My dice,,, and the pile you can borrow from if you need a roll.

This. And the "loaner" dice are this really bright sparkly semi-translucent purple.

I'm not terribly supersticious, anymore, but I have a very specific way I roll a single die. At least one member of my group cannot hit unless she uses a dice cup.

I used to be pretty supersticious. New dice would always be left overnight in a bowl of salt water in a window with a view of the full moon, before ever being used.

I also used to microwave my dice, but that's less supersticious and more just sad hax.

She kept a fire extinguisher on hand in the off chance that I "might be the anti-Christ and burst into flames as a result of this ritual."

During the intervening years I bought random dice that matched the set I have so now I have two d20's and other dice. Anyway it is said at the table that one of the two d20's is "lucky", my gf will fight me tooth and nail for that specific dice to "take it away from the DM". I've never done anything to it other than once making a prayer while holding it that my luck be transferred to the dice. But they don't know that part. How do you tell which one is the lucky one if they both look the same ? No idea...

Also when I get a new job I buy a new set of dice.

I always used my D&D 25th Aniversary Red d20 to confirm criticals.

I have a red RISK six sided die that once rolled 8 "6"s in a roll and singlehandly saved the entire party during a game of Shadowrun. I always use that for Sneak Attack rolls.

I only use Game Science dice when I play (save for the two dice mentioned above).

I never, ever roll on paper of any kind.

Pretty sure this is actually a real thing and not a superstition.

Sep 20, 2012 15:50:47 I use a mix of red translucent and flat grey dice, all of which are initiated via a ritual of being rolled a few hundred times the ones that roll low are put through torture untill they roll better. forms of torture include, being taped to firecrackers and blown up, frozen, and stabbed with a sharp knife. Dice that roll averagely high are placed in my velvet lined dice bag and incense is ceremonially burned around them before each use. yeah i know it's crazy but it seems to work. especially when i make the other dice watch the torturing. i have one particular d20 that i call the "blood die" that i only use for important rolls, that dice has seen its share of hell and it rolls really well now.

and yes, NEVER roll on paper
