| #1TwalfordSep 20, 2012 2:47:45 | I apologisefor the newbie question but this is literally my first character. I am confused as to the difference between the two. The players handbook I have must be an old one as it doesn't mention sub classes (if that is even the right term. If anyone can explain this to me I would appreciate it. T |

Clerics (including warpriests) are leaders, meaning they have access to healing powers and powers that buff allies or hinder enemies. Initially clerics had primarily wisdom-based implement or strength-based weapon powers, but the Warpriest shook things up a bit by adding a slew of wisdom-based melee powers. The Warpriest also gets shield proficiency for free, but doesn't get to pick its powers (its domain/diety choice determines its power selection at all levels). The Warpriest (like all essentials subclasses) is meant to be a fast/easy to build/play option, while the traditional cleric offers a wider array of options. |
| #3TwalfordSep 20, 2012 8:14:20 | Ah so can any cleric be made into a war priest essentially? Or do those wisdom based melee attacks only apply to war priests? |
| #4GelatinousOctahedronSep 20, 2012 9:36:56 | Its tricky because they used the word warpriest in multiple ways and built the cleric class over a couple of years. And cleric now has more sub builds and I think powers than any other class. Every cleric starts out as a warpriest or a templar (the PHB version you have). You have a DDI subsciption so you can look up all the specific differences in the compendium. |
| #5MalakLightfootSep 20, 2012 13:53:38 | Ah so can any cleric be made into a war priest essentially? Or do those wisdom based melee attacks only apply to war priests? The best way I can break it down is thus: Strength based Templars (PHB1 Cleric) are WARRIORS of god. Heavy emphasis on the warrior part with mostly melee attacks. Wisdom based Templars are warriors OF GOD. Heavy emphasis on calling down divine wrath, not so much getting in the enemy's faces. Warpriests blur that line a bit, being wisdom based and melee. Through selection of Daily powers, Warpriests can call upon a little of that divine smiting. Through selection of Warpriest melee powers, Wisdom based Templars have options if the enemy gets in their face. The trickiest part of blurring the lines between melee and ranged is the need to keep up with both a weapon and a holy symbol (unless you take a Feat or Feature that allows you to use a weapon in which you are proficient as an implement. |
