Just a rant(mainly because I swore to my friends that I would do it). Anyway, first round hit by a drow, also hit my fort so I'm poisoned. My next turn roll a 3, so I'm weakened, next turn roll a 4, so I'm unconscious. . I know there are items to help against that but it's totally not worth it to get them just because of one incident. Not sure if this would get moved so in order to keep that from happening here's a What's a player to do? follow up question. Anybody else get cheesed by drow poison or whatever(dominate, stunned, etc...) and have a hard time with saves or whatever. And what steps did you take to prevent that from happening again or did you just chalk it up to bad luck?

(p.s. Then when I was unconscious a troll coup de graced me...that dirty mother *BLEEP*)

I was playing a monk 1st level and against koblods. I got hit by a glue shot first round and couldn't save for the life of me. I spent the whole combat twiddeling my thumbs while the rest of the party cleaned up. Bummer. I took it with a grain of salt and made sure slingers were the first to die in the remaining encounters.

Im the only Healer in our party and we were in a "boss" fight when I got dominated and could not save, two PCs and the rangers bear were down before I could get free and help.

Against a brown dragon, the paladin never saw what hit him. He literally spent the whole time blind. Still managed to defend though.

This is one of the reason why it is best to leave the drow alone! :D

Worst case was failing a Will save, and having Grazz't popping out of him. No means of rezzing either. All future characters had either protection from evil spells or potions on them at all times.

The only problem I can see here is the troll CdGing you. Not only is that a pretty dickish thing for a DM to do to a player (and expressly discouraged in the DMG), it's totally out of character for a troll. Trolls are supposed to be stupid and just maul whoever looks like the biggest threat (generally the last person to damage them), not slitting the throats of unconscious foes.

Perhaps the troll, who we all know isn't very smart, didn't know that non-trolls don't regenerate as was just doing the logical thing to stop the fallen player from getting back up.

Heck, the troll could have done the coup de grace, then taken the body and buggered off. That's what many an animal does. Get's it's meal, and is done what it had to do. Trolls, seem to be a bit smarter than animals in D&D so the death may have been justified. As to the Coup de Grace being 'dickish', well, that depends on the group. Some have no problem with deaths like this, while other groups whine and cry fowl. Some monsters WILL kill you, plain and simple.

I'm the party's rogue so I get into all sorts of fun. I was in a very large dungeon and pretty much EVERY door was trapped. The hidden doors were trappped, the regular doors were trapped, the chests in the hidden rooms were trapped. Eventually my luck had to run out.

First it ran out when some stones came down no me but no biggie I lived.

Later on my luck ran out again (much to my DMs chagrin because he loved this trap) and I got hit by a magical poison. Failed the save, and had my stats change to (cha-4, wis-4, int-3). He said I am now effectively mentally challenged. Whats worse it would last for hours. So we decided to press on anyway and ended up in a fight with some constructs. My DM was nice enough to let me do basic attacks (not that i could sneak attack or do more than 1d6 damage anyway on the constructs).

The rest of the dungeon went pretty well (I had a +15 disable device and +15 open lock)

Last week we ran into a vampire that one of our party members tried to do business with alone. We decided to come back and kill him and the room to his lair was trapped. Well I detect a trap, I go to disable device and roll a 5... which sets off the trap. A disintigration ray (we were all only level 7!)... I had to get an 18 or higher on my fortitude save or I was going to be dead instantly (and I made it). Well then at the time I was under the impression that a magical trap's DC was 20+spell level (its actually 25+spell level, and disintigration is level 8) and I thought my +16 in disable device would give me a reasonable chance so I tried again after I got healed... and I rolled a 6. and once again I made the fortitude save for half damage. but we had to continue and I figured my luck would have to come back eventually... I roll again and... 4. The DM looks at me and tells me it has run out of charges (it actually had 4 charges but he fudged it).

However I am excited for the next trap I face. I'll get a +17 (or +19 if our new bard helps out) so its going down!

Also for poisons, invest in some anti-toxins. It'll give you a +5 on fortitude saves against poison for about an hour I believe. Just hold onto 1 or 2 and use them if you know you're going to be fighting someone that can poison you. That or take it after you make the initial save and it could save you from secondary damage

Couple of more points...when the troll CdGed me I was only down a few hit points since the drow hit in the first round was the only damage I took before going unconscious. If the troll had walked away with me the funny thing is it would have taken me out of the encounter and I would haven woken up and probably would have killed the troll and then could re-enter the first fight. And Mock26...I'm playing a friggin Drow...wtf! Where was I when they passed out the poison? Nightson...when I went down I remembered a Rogue power that lets me knock someone out but if they take damage they wake up. But while I was out I had some time to look up rules and couldn't find anything that would help me get back up. I wasn't knocked out from going to O hps so healing wouldn't work, and it seems like PC powers are the only ones that say if the enemy takes damage they wake up. Drow poison says if you fail the second save you fall unconscious till the end of the encounter...done.

Well, I remember a thread recently about practically identical cheese available to wizards at level 1 - Sleep doesn't specify waking when damaged, only 'save ends', so an Orb Wizard can quite ably keep monsters unconcious and taking CdG damage for a turn or two.

Might be an idea to ask your DM to rule that taking damage always wakes you from the unconcious condition, as long as it's not negative hp induced. Or perhaps 'You wake at the start of your first turn after taking damage.', so that it's still a dangerous effect.

During one of our recent sessions, we were in the midst of defending a city from a ratman invasion from the city sewers. I was playing a half-orc barbarian. To make a long story short, I got surrounded by 8 ratmen, one of which had a poisoned blade. The bad part was that the poison required a will save instead of a fort save and it put me to sleep. I got stabbed the same round and woke up, but laying down with 8 ratman around me wasn't the best place to be. I stood up and got hit with 8 AoOs and that was the end of my barb.

The good news was that my character had saved some orphines a few days prior and was hailed as the city's hero. I got a nice statue in the park where he was felled.

I think I played this same encounter this past weekend.

I had two turns then I was out. Our Dwarven defender was the only one awake at the end of the encounter.

Yeah, I feel that pain! I had a cool first level character (think half-vampire Japanese schoolgirl barbarian with pink hair and a greatsword bigger than she was) that led the party down some stairs after a wight.

Little did we know that there was a Brain in a Jar hidden amongst a whole lot of other body parts behind a steel grill.

The first thing I know about the Brain is the DM saying (in secret) you have failed your DC18 Will save and are now dominated - turn around and kill the other party members.

Now DC18 Will save at first level is pretty harsh (even though she had Iron Will feat). But there isn't a whole lot a party can do against a raging barb at first level... Needless to say, for those that didn't run like b*ggery it was TPK all 'round. Hate that sinking feeling when you fail a save and you know that pretty much nothing will save you and you are s*rewed.

In 4E, you should be having *tons* of spare saves going around. All Leaders have at least one convenient power to grant extra saves, as do Paladins, and *anyone* can use the Heal skill DC15 to grant you an immediate Save, or a +2 untyped bonus to a save at the end of your next turn.

Oh, and only saves at the end of your turn count towards effects on a failed save. You can fail three dozen saves before the end of your next turn and never get worse - only the one at the end of your turn causes the negative effect.

I know I mentioned it was drow poison but I guess I didn't mention I was in the drow's cloud of darkness. Party of mostly strikers so no saves from powers. Besides the drow that moved up between me and my allies there were also 2 trolls there so nobody could make it to me in 1 round to help(not that they would have tried considering they were all cheering for me to fail my save )

This makes sense, but do you have a reference?

PHB2, pg 219.

Failed Saving Throw: Sometimes an effect changes as a target fails saving throws against it. The new effect, specified in a “First Failed Saving Throw” or a “Second Failed Saving Throw” entry, takes effect after the target fails a saving throw against the previous effect at the end of the target’s turn. The effect doesn’t change if the creature fails a saving throw against it at a time other than the end of its turn.
