| #1haplo81Sep 02, 2010 16:37:58 | Dude attacked us in the street, we beat him and his pals and grabbed him. My character is a Lyrandar noble, so we took him to the House's captain in charge of anti-piracy (the Boromars are attacking ships in the harbor). The captain was happy to have him for interrogation, but Ilyra Boromar, the head of the gang and a City Council member, is missing him. So far she seems to think he's gone on a bender, but if he doesn't turn up soon, she's likely to get angry. If he turns up dead, she'll be pissed, but if we let him go, he'll likely tell Ilyra that we're the ones who grabbed him. The party has been tasked with preventing any escalation in gang violence, so we can't exactly slit his throat and dump him in Daask territory. So far, the best idea we have is to get some non-sentient monsters to attack him. Any other ideas? |
| #2Mad_JackSep 02, 2010 17:18:41 | Um, is there any way you can set him up? Put him in a compromising situation that his boss lady wouldn't want getting out to the public, which will cause her to cover it up and sweep it under the carpet. It will also cause some discord between the two of them, which may be a good thing if it's big enough to get him demoted/punished/replaced... Just make sure the party has an alibi for the time when he's discovered doing whatever it is you set him up for, in order to throw suspicion off the party and make the guy look even more guilty when he tries to tell people you set him up. Some ideas for framing/getting rid him: - make it look like he's stealing from the gang (complicated) - if people think he's been out partying, have him wake up with a dead prostitute or arrange to have something that's easily identifiable as his found on the body of somebody "he" killed in a knife fight. (slightly easier to arrange) - make it look like a natural death... some sort of overdose, or pour a ton of booze down his throat and then shove him down some stairs or something similar (doable, but possibly not great if divination rituals are readily avaiable) Of course, a great deal of how many options you have and how hard it will be to pull them off depend greatly on the party's alignment and just what they're willing to do in order to cover their tracks. One other thought, is there any way you could use the fact that the boss lady will be pissed off if the guy dies to your advantage? (Although that probably goes against the whole "trying not to escalate things" clause...) |
| #3jetshieldSep 02, 2010 17:45:29 | You had a fight in a public street with this guy and his friends. You won, and took him prisoner. Got that much. How is this a secret at all? It's a public street. Are you telling me nobody saw or heard a thing? This Ilyra Boromar can't just buy this information from someone (or beat it out of them - well have one of her henchmen beat it out of them)? Anyway, assuming she doesn't know, and can't find out, where he's gotten to, why should he ever turn up at all? Just keep him, until his usefulness ends. Then serve him up for dinner. Sure, she'll be mad, but it won't be at you. If she randomly strikes out at someone over it, use it as an excuse to drive a knife between her ribs "for the greater good". Disclaimer: I know exactly nothing about Eberron in general or your campaign specifically, so it's possible (probable?) that nothing above applies. If so, I apologise for wasting virtual space. |
| #4Mad_JackSep 02, 2010 22:25:55 | Jetshield makes a very valid point - just how public was the original fight? (jetshield, the Eberron campaign world is exactly the sort of place where somebody would be cutting their mother's throat for the chance to sell a juicy bit of information to an important gang leader - it's basically the D&D version of the world of the Indiana Jones films, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, etc.) Unless the original fight was in an alley or something, there's a chance that somebody saw something... |
| #5haplo81Sep 02, 2010 22:28:38 | Some people came up after the fight, when the guy was already on the ground. Some Diplomacy and Intimidate convinced them that it was best if they didn't volunteer information, since the Watch in that part of town was under Boromar's thumb. We cleared out, along with all the civilians, before anyone else showed up. |
| #6jetshieldSep 02, 2010 22:45:53 | Personally, I wouldn't rely on diplomacy and/or intimidate to keep the secret for very long. Naturally, the people are going to assure you that they'd never say anything while you're there, but give them a few days to think about it, and they might start to see profit in a whisper in the right direction. Now, if you follow up your diplomacy/intimidate with a small demonstration of how it's good to be your friend (in the form of gifts), you can significantly reduce that urge to take risks for profit. It also shows them that you know where they live.... |
| #7jim11735Sep 03, 2010 9:10:39 | Do you know why he attacked your group? Was it his idea or was he following orders? I think that's something the captain could have found out during the interrogation. My suggestion would be to target this high-ranking gangsters operations or if you know who his superior is (depends on how high-ranking). Your reacting to getting attacked by him, perhaps searching for more information he may have let slip (or just make it up). Then after you take it to them, release the guy you nabbed. Everyone will know you interrogated him, and that your pissed he attacked you. His superiors, maybe even Ilyra Boromar, would be better off throwing you guys some heroic adventure than having your busting up their operations. Take the high road, but bring a big stick. |
| #8TimmehSep 03, 2010 9:17:08 | Is there a #2 gang? You might escalate gang violence if you give the guy to the #2 gang, but it should die back down once the trail of bodies is cleaned up. |
| #9ellorinSep 05, 2010 10:42:14 | He should disappear. Just...disappear. Otherwise, frame him as a defector to an organisation other than a gang, say the dragonmarked House of your choice. Blackmail him. Find his weak spot and actually turn him against the Boromars. Make a deal with the Tyrants and have him impersonated(or any sufficiently advanced in that area faction. They would jump at the opportunity to put a mole in the Boromars). |

Seconded, Thirded, and Fourthed. Of course, I usually play instigators, so I'd kind of hope for divination spells to be used, just so they'd know I was the one who actually kicked him down the stairs. |
