Elf Rogue Question

Aug 14, 2009 6:52:10 In 3.5 would it but possible for an Elf rogue to use a longsword and a shortbow? Or would those weapons just noy be suited to the Rogue class? If they can use them, would there be any drawbacks or penalties associated with their use? Thanks.

Aug 14, 2009 7:04:02 Yes. A rogue can use any weapon their proficent with. You can take the Weapon Proficency (Greatsword) feat and appy that with your sneak attack if you really want. Many fighters take levels in rogue to gain the extra damage with their attacks.

Aug 14, 2009 12:58:29 Rogues tend to have high Dexterity, and the feat Weapon Finesse allows the use of Dexterity for to-hit rolls (but not damage) for rapiers and light weapons.

You can use an axe if you like, and I'm pretty sure you can use a blunt weapon and still 'back-stab'.

As far as a short bow, yeah .. good idea. It took me a few levels of getting smacked around before I bought a short bow and stopped rushing into melee. You can still shoot flat-footed people at the beginning of battle for back-stab damage, if you get within 30 feet, also the range of the point blank shot feat, iirc.

The short bow is perfect for a rogue. While the longsword doesn't have any penalties for a rogue, it really isnt that suited either. It isn't a light weapon so no weapon finesse. No reach, so you have to be crafty so you dont take too many hits if you are going sword/shield. Best you can do is either go for two weapon fighting to get more attacks in, or to a lesser extent, try and weild it two handed.

IMO, the best weapon for a rogue is a throwing axe/dagger. Ranged so you dont have to be in melee if you dont want to (but you can), and you can add your strength bonus.

I'm almost positive there's a rule that says you can only sneak attack with light weapons.

I'm afraid you're wrong. A rule similar to that exists in 4e, but in 3e, you could sneak attack with anything.

Yeah, just checked the SRD and it didn't mention anything about non light weapons being used...guess I was thinking of the 4e thingy *shrugs*
