Encounter Power as a Basic Attack

Jun 04, 2009 22:48:12 I'm playing a half-elf and took the Warlock power Eldritch Strike with the Dilettante ability. Eldritch Stike, normally an at-will, counts as a basic melee attack. For me, for whom it is an encounter power, is the power considered expended if I use it as a basic melee attack? Or vice versa, if I've already used the power, can I still use it to make basic melee attacks?

Also, as a hybrid bard, am I better off having a power that can be used as a basic melee or basic ranged (eldritch strike vs blast)?

Jun 04, 2009 23:00:01 But, and encounter power is expended when you use it, regardless of the nature of how it was used. If you chose Magic Missile, you could use it once per encounter, but no more, even though it would count as basic attack.

And yeah, my bad for using the word hybrid. I forgot it actually has an in-game meaning now. I meant that my bard as a mix of melee and ranged powers, though mostly ranged healing stuff (6th level one shot). Given that, would I be better off, in a 4 person party (bard, paladin, wizard, rogue), to have Eldritch Strike or Eldritch Blast?

...Up untile level 11 where you versatile up yourself and use it as proper
at-will. But i guess that was the plan from the begining .

It depends on your group. If it's a ranged-heavy group, go for the melee attack. If melee is cluttered with rangers, fighters, and avengers (oh my!) than go for the extra ranged attack.

Jun 08, 2009 4:08:47 in my experience, being a "basic attack" is a more valuable trait in melee powers. The fact that an eldritch strike is a MBA means you can use it for opportunity attacks and charges, which is nice (at level 11 it will be an at-will and you won't even need melee training to have decent charges or OAs).

You don't reaaally need a ranged basic attack. It doesn't make all that much difference. If I were you I'd just get eldritch strike and pick one of the ranged bard at-wills.

There's a Paragon Half-Elf feat that lets you use the Dilletante Power as an at-will, so not automatic, but likely that you'd want to do so.
