exalted template?

Feb 16, 2009 21:21:58 ive been playing dnd for awhile now and been looking into playing an acrhon specifically a hound archon ranger.....can anyone shed some light on this idea?....good or bad?

As a player, I try to stay away from any super bizarre character types that might throw the group off. As a hound archon with NO class levels, you're equivalent to an 11th level character. (6 HD, +5 LA). So....a first level character has an ECL of 12. Are you guys starting at or near that level?

Also, as an undeniable force of good, you've got to play that.

Our group calls the BoED the Book of Extremely Broken, but if you guys can play it with no undue problems, more power to you.

As a player, I try to stay away from any super bizarre character types that might throw the group off. As a hound archon with NO class levels, you're equivalent to an 11th level character. (6 HD, +5 LA). So....a first level character has an ECL of 12. Are you guys starting at or near that level?

Even if you are, think (at least) twice. You'll be playing as a 7HD character when the game assumes you have 12HD, which makes your hp, attack bonus, and saves significantly lower than they should be. Basically, anything that gets past your DR or SR is going to tear you apart.

LA +5 is frankly just too high, unless the entire party is in the same range and the DM takes a lot of extra care balancing encounters. Unless you're in very unusual circumstances, playing a hound archon is a bad idea.
