Consider this version two of my DM section thread.

Nothing your or the other players, or the DM do, can be excused if done to excess.

You are not the center of attention, the DM is not god, and too much roll play sucks just like too much roleplay.

The DM should curb their obsession with the idea they are so brilliant, and the players shouldn't spend all session arguing rules with the DM.

And you should just learn to know when it is time to get up and go home, because some games DO suck and are not worth saving. Sometimes coming here is not going to provide a magic fix.

But feel free to vent

I somewhat disagree on there being a possibility of a game having too much roleplaying. Granted, if it does not advance the plot (also known as "We're sitting here, having a tea party. With scones, if we're feeling particularly English.") it is bad if used in excess, but there's nothing wrong with the whole thing being done in roleplaying... if the whole group agrees.

If it doesn't, your points are certainly valid.

Agreed, everything in moderation.

I've never known a situation where there was 'too much' roleplaying, and I play MUSH games.

There is however, such a thing as too much bad roleplaying.  One-dimensional personalities and plotlines to make the simplistic hollywood adventure flicks of the 30's and 40's look like masterworks of depth and character development.  Such roleplaying is physically painful to encounter, and should be crushed with all speed wherever it is found.  ;)

"Excessive is ALWAYS undesirable."

"Everything in moderation."

And now from Obiwan Kenobi, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes."

I love this thread.

How does this apply to a character?  If I build a character he/she's going to do the same thing all the time.  Whatever my character's focus is, is going to be what they are doing.  If I'm a defender, then I'm going to defend.  Take hits.  And keep you from getting at my party.  If I'm a tripper, I'm going to trip.  If I'm a grappler, I'm going to grapple.  Etc.
