#1 Kajashi May 16, 2014 16:21:39	I'd like y'all's opinion on this:   I just found out that a couple of my friends play DnD, and we're discussing getting a group together. I found out that all of them only have the PH1, and no other suplements or anything (except the DM, who has DM-y stuff). I have a whole bunch of books and suplements, but I don't know if it's fair to use them, since the others don't have the same variety, and they refuse to borrow the books I have.   So here is my question to you: Would you only use the PH if that is what everyone else has, or would you use supplements?   PS the DM says he's fine either way, but I'd feel bad using stuff that the others can't. Plz hlp.

#4 Krusk May 17, 2014 8:20:49	Yeah, to me you made the offer and they turned it down, but said you could do it. Go at it, again, they said you could.    If you hadn't asked, or hadn't offered to share that could be one thing but in this instance I can't see why you should feel bad at all.
#5 RedSiegfried May 17, 2014 18:26:51	I like what Chainsawhand said about if you use more resources, they might be inspired to try some different things.  Also, go ahead and build whatever character you want using the resources you have, but just be sure that when you PLAY your character, you don't intentionally steal the spotlight from others at their expense.  Just because you're using more options doesn't mean that the rules will force you to turn all the other characters into your sidekicks or caddies or manservants ... only you, as a player, can make that happen by the choices you make and how you treat the other players.  So avoid all that and instead encourage them to participate as equals, and create opportunities for that to happen, even if their characters may have somewhat fewer or lesser capabilities than yours.   It should be all about players working together to have fun.  If you're doing that then everyone wins.   EDIT:  Oh yeah, and for more info on what it looks like when one PC overshadows all the others, see this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFuMpYTyRjw   ;)
(Reply to #3) MrCustomer	I say use your books. However I would add the disclaimee that you try not to go overboard. As long as your character isn't overshadowing the group as a result, then all is good.
#7 Mad_Jack May 24, 2014 21:21:37	I think it might be important to know why they didn't want to use your books. In previous editions, many people believed the material in the books beyond the PHB1 (and in Dragon magazine) was mostly either overpowered or so underpowered as to be useless, and required a great deal of system mastery to use well.

You have good intentions, so the easy thing is to know the following: You offer them the option, perhaps they may not want to get too much over their heads and are comfortable with what they have. Or they might really like what they chose. The ther part was that the dungeon master saw and he said it was okay for you to use the other sources.My advice as a player of 10+ years is to just play a character you like and that will be a fun to be around with other players. Play for you, but don't  play and make it about other people you wont have fun trust me.

#11 Noon May 30, 2014 17:05:20	Choose one or two books to draw from. Only use those.   Then you can point other players to what you used if they become interested in further books.
