So in the game I am currently playing, I took over DMing for a story arc to let our DM take a break. In doing so I sent my Sword Mage Gnome off for a little bit. Well here soon he gets to come back, and I am allow to bring him back with a mount, as the one he had the party killed in his absence. I want it to be one from the Fey, as he that is where he went to take care of family matters, and it can't fly. I would like it to be medium size, that was he is still close to the ground and about to use his sword to attack.  Thought about doing a Displacer Beast, I know they are not an official mount, that and in the MM (Page 70) it state they have a habit of turning on their owners. Anyone have any suggestions?

Once again I would like...

1. Creature of the Fey
2. Can't fly
3. Medium sized
4. Something cool, not a riding dog or donkey...

Thanks!!!11

Assuming that this mount has been preapproved by the DM and you're allowed to get something like a Displacer Beast, I'll throw some ideas out there.

1) A Giant Fey Spider.
2) A Fey Panther.
3) A Cloud of tiny Fey Sprites that propel you along on a disc of Fey force at about Pony-level off the ground.
4) A Worg.
5) A trained Ogre that carts you around on its back.
6) A Giant Fey Frog.
7) A Magical construct made out of brambles and vines with the stats of a Horse.
8) A Drake.

As a DM I always made it a point to harrass the PCs with unusual mounts by making stabling such creatures outside large cities/specialized areas a distinct pain in the behind.  After all nobody wants a large, violent, carnivorous beast in the same wooden enclosure with peaceful and tasty normal mounts.

. . . That is possibly one of the most awesome mounts for a gnome of which I've ever heard. +1 Internets to you.

Rofl - Giant Butterfly

I could see a Gnome Swordmage riding one into battle. His opponent would be laughing so hard they would not be able to defend them self.

I like the idea of the Blink Dog, wouldn't happen to know the book/page number for it?

Thanks

Well I had a Giant Riding Lizard already. But when my Gnome when to the Fey for family matters, he left it behind for his friend a dragon born Paladin, but the friend went and died. So another member of the party took over the Lizard, well that member went and got the Lizard killed. I will be handing the DMing over to our normal DMm here soon, and in doing so I will bring my Gnome friend back. DM said as thanks for DMing for him he'd let me come back with a mount. Well since I'm in the Fey I want it to be a Fey mount, and since Im a swordmage, I'd like it small so I can easily attack while mounted. I like the idea of the Fey Panther, but we are level 8, and Im worried a level 4 mount will die way to easy.

Owlbears are originally from the Feywild. Whether they would tolerate being ridden is a matter for you guys to figure out.

Glue... Lots and lots of glue. And maybe some spirits for the rider.

If you play 4th edition, then this might not work, but if you use 3.5 (or just have the monster manual 3) consider taking Leadership and getting a Bearhound cohort (CR 7, monster manual 3). Its very, very fey, and has no game-breaking powers, but it is a beast in combat. Also consider making a very young bearhound, which would be medium size, and weaker, which "ages" (read: levels up) with your character.

Its less cosmetic than the other mounts, I admit, but its an extremely fairylike mount.

Another option is to take any monster, and add the half-fey template (from Fiend Folio). This, in my opinion, is much more game altering, since it pastes butterfly wings onto any creature, and gives spell-like abilities based on HD. in addition to the pump-up in stats, this can be a nasty hassle to your DM, but it would be the most fairly-like mount I can think of other than a palanquin of fairies.

Take a page from WoW and have a mount that's purely roleplayed.  Make it a giant turtle or snail; both of them are slow-moving creatures, explaining why you don't go any faster than you would on foot.  They both have protective shells, which lets you explain why they can't be simply killed by an enemy.  Neither is typically large enough to support even a gnome, which I'd say makes their size qualification enough for 'creature of the feywild'.

Using the RAW, any mount you get (in 4e) has to be large sized.  I suspect this was mainly to keep gnomes and halflings from riding around on other people, or from riding around on their ranger beast companions.

Add to that the fact that the MMs generally try to point what would be an "appropriate" mount by using the mount keyword in the stat block.  You won't find any medium sized creatures with that keyword because they aren't intended to have it.

If you insist on having a medium sized mount, and your DM will actually let you, you might be best off riding a "young" version of an existing mount, shrunk from large to medium size.

Per the May Errata this is no longer the case, though finding a ready made medium sized mount may be difficult.

Clawfoot from eberron campaign guide is medium and a mount,  i can't say i know of any 'fey' mounts that are by default, but you could easily reskin the clawfoot or any other mount to be something cool if you like.

Glue some fairy wings on it, and no one will be the wiser.

I know that mounts are suppose to be large, but for small creatures, they need something they can ride, and still be able to use close attacks from. A three foot creature has what, a foot reach? Add in two feet for a sword, that gives them a three foot attack range. Sitting on top a creature thats 4 - 5 feet off the ground, its going to be hard to hit anything. I've given thought to just picking a small Fey creature and asking if it could be my mount with no abilities, but that takes half the fun from having a mount.

Lots of good input guys, thanks.
