Fiendish Mounts for Large Blackguards?

May 17, 2008 13:48:15 Can anyone point out to me what the information was on mounts for large PC's?

I know its in the DMG some where, but I don't have my copy could someone tell me what suggestions it gives?

I am reasonably certain you are wrong. A character must ride a mount one size category larger than he is, and heavy horses are still large. A large creature can no more ride one than a human can ride a standard wolf.

I mean a Paladin who wants to have a different mount than the first level ones usually has to wait until he's higher level and the level that the mount is treated as is significantly less, so I was hoping that maybe there was something mentioned somewhere about mounts for larger creatures. Perhaps I should just take the leadership feat.

May 22, 2008 14:11:32 To expand on my previous post, a Feat from Dungeon #100 was suggested to me which would allow a blackguard to have a Nightmare as a mount, treating it just like any other "fiendish servant" the blackguard had available to it. When a Nightmare gains a certain amount of hit die, they become huge creatures; the only thing the Feat didn't mention was how to calculate Intelligence increases, so we house-ruled that it's Intelligence increased at the same rate as it's Strength (otherwise it'd start off dumber than normal).

I don't believe that there is a definitive rule, sadly. Much like how the PrC fails to specify which kind of horse you get (there are four varieties in the Monster Manual alone), there aren't explicit rules for variant mounts. It's something of an oversight, unfortunately.
