| #1VujinJan 20, 2014 18:13:04 | Greetings everyone! I come to you all with a rather interesting challenge that lies in front of me.
The situation is like this, I am playing a Githzerai Avenger of Tempus. Early in his childhood his village was raided and destroyed, and he was sold into slavery, managing to escape at around the age of 21. Finding Tempus to be a just Diety, honoring both sides in combat, and thinking that a fist or a blade can say more then words ever could, he became a devout follower.
The twist comes when I was sent by a spirit of tempus to a different realm (where the rest of the group is), a realm where no Dieties hold any power over. A realm where people don't believe in them what so ever. How do I go about spreading faith about Tempus?
Do I claim I'm the messiah of a new world order and get burned alive, or should I seek political connections and maybe see if I can acomplish something using the "system"?
The endgame hope is to have a unified religion in this world, worshiping Tempus, and me being the supreme Exarch (or some title like that?). What are the steps to take in that direction? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to religion, so this is all rather new and strange to me.
Thanks for all the help! |

| #3iserithJan 23, 2014 5:00:29 | What is everyone else in the group doing? Have you consulted them and the DM to see how your idea fits in with their ideas? That's your primary concern. They may have ideas that will specifically mesh with their own goals and whatever the DM has planned for the campaign. |

I talked to him about it, and he says I can go for it, but to be prepared for a really difficult road ahead of me, because the world we are in is almost completely non religious in any way.
As for what the rest of the group is doing, and how I'm to implement this in the game itself, I don't plan on making it the focus of the game in any way, it's just something I'd like to do on the side so to say. At the moment we are leaving the city (quest hub) to go investigate some attacks on the nearby villages, the standard stuff for low lvls. The main way I thought of doing this is since in the city we just left there are weekly arena fights, and we won the first round and advanced into the next weeks one. I wanted to use that to demonstrate in some way, probably in martial prowess, the blessing of tempus provides great power, and after winning in a convincing fashion (if that even happens) have a big speech about it.
It's just something to go along the DMs story, and the rest of the group. I'd like to avoid getting the group in a bad situation because of it, and also I'd like to know what would make sense to actualy start doing, since I'm not a religious person IRL either, I don't really know how these sorts of things work. |

Bards are always looking for new tales, so after every quest go to the nearest bard tell him of the parties accomplishments, beliefs and goals. Any time you save a village or group of people tell them you did it in the name of Tempus. |

There is a paragon path for Vestige'Locks (I think God Fragment) whose fluff you may find of interest.
If I had to start a new faith, I would want to: - work miracles to get attention, - tell all witnesses to tell their friends (lots of word of mouth), - be invited to popular assemblies - big audiences - but don't hog other folks' spotlight, - make some friends in high places just in case , - come to understanding with Authorities so you do not threaten their rule/perks/legitimacy/cashflow, and they do not interfere with you, (if possible) - have a well-educated follower write a biography of you / book about your teachings posthumously, addressed to the upper classes, - codify the faith's essential tenets - and leave doctrine for the next generation!, - live out the way you want people to behave; simple people need a simple example, - accept that the Faith will not sweep the land until centuries after your death, - die a martyr's legendary death (bring PR machine and myth-making wordsmith along).
Of course, very publicly saving the whole land from a terrible menace, dying in the process, having a State funeral, and being resurrected by the power of your god shortly thereafter, never hurts either.
Edit: note that most of this is stuff that can happen between adventures. If you have a good CHR, some of the 'make contacts' stuff can be worked into other skill challenges. Can you pick up a Heal spell? Or a functional equivalent, such as Druid's Life Seed? 1/Day miracle; step 1, check! |
