What is your special Player Power?

Everyone who plays the game feels like they’ve got some kind of edge over the other players or even the DM. Some feel like they always roll 20’s and they crit every battle or even every round. Another example would be guys who feel that as they take more damage they do more damage becoming something like a wounded badger. So what do you feel is your special power or unique quality?

For me it’s the fact that I have never died in the game, at least not permanently. I’ve had many people score me out and hunt me down. I’ve even have had one person succeed but I was immediately revived. I’m talking about over a decade of playing and I’ve never gone down for the count. I did have one character that was smacked down and beheaded by the other players (don’t ask) but they didn’t know I had made myself an intelligent zombie so beheading me didn’t work. As they continued to tear down the boss they witnessed my character’s body fumbling for the head and then running away like a wide receiver. That was incidentally my weakest character and I learned the difference between indestructible and undefeatable.

My other interesting quality in gaming is that I can ‘sense’ treasure. I was once a game session behind and I walked through a burned out temple (our players are destructive) to where the head priest was killed in mid-ceremony. I walked past the altar and told the DM that I strike the wall with my battle hammer. Behind the wall was a rod that would later prove to change the course of the game. Another time we were in a pyramid and we became sealed within while a poisonous gas began filling the area. On the other side a huge golem drew its sword and took an offensive stance. All the players rushed to attack the golem, but I got there first. I scurried up the golem and grabbed the ruby from its forehead. I motioned like I was going to swing at the wall and golem followed suit. The resulting destruction freed the group and dissipated the gas. It’s actually so accurate and random that I’ve been accused of stealing peeks at the DM’s notes, but most of our games aren’t that well planned. It works with video games, too, or at least until they got all 3D and super complex.

I don't. In more than 20 years of playing and DMing, I've never once felt like I was better than the rest of the group.

I didn't mean better than the group exactly. I just meant some kind of edge or specialty you have.
Wat do you do that makes you stand out in the pack?

Sometimes, I bring chips and soda.  I'm also pretty good at joking around, IC or OOC.

I would also like to think that I am the most attractive.

I'm the DM, 'nuff said.

Well, i played as a PC with my group a couple times. I'd say that my special power as a player is Absolute Rules Knowledge.
Whenever i play i'm the one everyone ask rules questions to.
Even other DMs usually trust my memory more then theirs. I guess i read the books too much

You can never read the books too much. The others can only read them too little (unless you spend the entire summer break (in Denmark it is 7-8 weeks) doing nothing but studying them).

Nah, i'm not that extreme nowadays.
I used to do that when i was younger, with 3ed edition. Reading and memorizing books everyday, and DMing almost every day.
That was some crazy dedication, i tell you Tongue out

I'm not that extreme either. Though, I suppose our DM would be able to spend 8 weeks studying the rules just to be sure he's got the rules in his head (Not because he reads slowly, but because he doesn't have much else to do aside from preparing for D&D, playing EVE Online and reading fiction). I'd rather spend those 8 weeks doing something else, like learn a new language, such as Japanese, just for the heck of it.

Still, I don't think anyone on these forums who be willing to spend 8 weeks reading the same 320 A4-pages over and over (one of our players did it with the PHB, just to get the rules straight, for a week and damn he got pissed when the rest of us took PHB2 classes and races. He had read every single word in the book, most of which was for nothing)...

I can predict any plot twist the GM tries to throw at us. Also, I can identify any non-homebrew monster within a round of encountering it.

Both of these stem from my status as the usual DM. As a player, I tend to take the role of the coordinator (RA/MA in MMO parlance), identifying target priority and talking the party through various engagements and tactics, for DMs that allow this sort of behavior.

Some of my groups are also rather amusing in terms of their player superpowers:

Current Sorcerer can identify any MacGuffin or plot-relevant item the moment it is introduced. His accuracy with this is uncanny to the point of precognitive.

Current Cleric can squick out any GM. She is also capable of highly improbably strings of crits.

Current Warlock can accurately identify anyone who is going to betray the party.

Current Battlemind doesn't ever drop in combat. He will frequently survive seven or eight consecutive rounds with single-digit HP, regardless of character.

I'm always the DM's favorite. Maybe it's cause I don't much argue about rules, or because I actually make a story for my character and I'm not a chaotic neutral female rogue or some other mary sue ****...

Whatever the reason. DM likes me best, and lets me get away with crap ingame.

My guess: By accident. If he does it on purpose, they would probably get pissed at him.

On purpose, both occasions.

The first time the player's character had a disease, and he insisted on going into town. To prevent the town from getting infected, I killed him. Unfortunately the disease in question was mummy rot, so unknown to the surviving members of the party he reanimated as a mummy, and stalked my character with vengence.

The second time was an evil campaign, and he was trying to leave the crime group we were in. 3 crossbow bolts prevented that from happening.

In terms of how we roll when playing D&D, our group has a charismatic power-player, the tactical pragmatist, the girlfriend (sigh), and the random-ass instigator.

I'm the go-getter--I resolve the plots, make and finish goals, keep us on task and tend to do what it takes to get something done plot-wise.

This overlaps into the metagame as well, unfortunately--I'm the one who points out the weirdness in the plotlines and NPCs, calls out the DM on the railroading and obvious plot twists (I correctly predicted  the main villain was our informant in disguise, predicted that a female sorceress NPC was our next villain after he died, predicted that our boat around the continent would be destroyed, making the campaign longer, etc. etc.), and tend to work on my own to ensure that something is actually accomplished. I get some flack for this, but I fill an unexpected niche, and we still have a great time.

I pull the most ballsy, should be instant death moves, and never die.  One time got sucked into a mini realm that was occupied only by a great wyrm red dragon, and his hoarde.  When given the chance to escape immediately, I decided instead to overburden myself with gold, gems, and swords (Bob had a weird thing with gathering swords...).  The dragon MISSED me with his breath, and MISSED me again with his fly-by swipe.  I then taunted the dragon,  grabbed the rope, and had my team pull me out.  The breath weapon MISSED yet again as I was getting pulled out.  Ended up with a pair of +2 bastard swords, nearly priceless gemstones, and a decent amount of gold (2nd ed, so that was a helluva haul).

Also, on a bard, stood toe to toe with a tyrannosaurus at level 5, got swallowed, and managed to kill the thing from inside its mouth, while grappling its tongue, to not get swallowed entirely.  On a bard who was entirely optimized for noncombat encounters.  To quote Tommy Boy, I could have sold a lady in white gloves a ketchup popsicle.

As best as I can tell, my player power is to be a small-L leader.

During a 3.0 module, my Bard beat up two monks and was working on a third while the dwarven fighter Power-Attacked - and missed - one guy.

My first 4e module, I ran my StarLock through a doorway and held one flank ... by using Eldritch Blast while melee'ing two foes.  And got two OAs for my pains.  (Ouch.)  Later I got a nice furry black cloak with a white stripe down the middle for a trophy - My First Victory.

The next year, I used Intimidate to blow out a Big Boss Fight for LFR.

This year at PentaCon, that same StarLock successfully completed an in-town skill challenge almost solo (20 CHR since level 1) and the rest of the group followed my suggestions for the rest of the game slot.

Also this year, when the Dwarven Battlerager actually got beaten unconscious (it took 3 enemies ganging up on him), everybody looked at ME like 'What do we do?"  I organized the effort to revive him and save the McGuffin, in that order.
The next fight, I was the one who got blown down and the party came to my aid.  Thanks, guys!

I have a knack for making my saving throws, particularly my Will saves. Even if it's something my character doesn't have a good handle on, I make around 80% of my saves, usually just by the skin of my teeth.

In one of my groups, I'm also the strongest character, so I'm the one who does the heavy lifting, the door-smashing, the choking of potential informants, and on one occasion, the one who shoves a zombie giant off a tower.

I think cutting sarcasm works equally well all builds.  It works particularly well with my eladrin swordmage.

In regard to real powers:  Disruptive strike.  If you use this power wisely and don't just pop it off for extra damage, you can swing a whole encounter.

I build characters very quickly and very often. I'll usually build three character concepts before a game because I can't settle on one. Usually, when my group starts a new campaign, while the others make their characters, I'll make mine, make a character for the guy who loves to roleplay but is terrible with mechanics, and then help the less savvy players finish.

Also, I have the power to smack our crazy DM upside the head when he's being a doofus. (We play at my house and me smacking him is a running gag lasting from before we started playing tabletop RPGs.)

I've come to find that I have a quite useful Player Power. It's called 'Creativity'. I simply tend to go out and find new uses for powers or do things in ways the other players don't think of. This includes 'accidentally' dropping a vial of water on a chalk circle meant for summoning demons, while the others would go out and spend ours looking for a way to stop the ritual, teleporting enemies off of ships, towers or the like, thus rendering them 'out of combat' or my personal favorite, "Knee-thrusting enemies from the top of a tower while wearing plate armor" (usually kills anything I hit, though the mechanic tends to have trouble fixing that character's artificial leg).

My son's chessmaster Warlord wants to use Opening Shove to emulate the Warden I met at Origins 2010.  She used some sort of readied action to knock a guy in heavy armor into Deep Water; that was the last we had to worry about him.  At the end of the LFR module, I got the chance to pick up Boots of Water-Walking. Cool

I Had the most sources for Powers and feats(I now Have all the Power books). With my access to DDI, I Had the GM say to some "Nope" to them. I have the Power to overwelm Others with my Access to Near-unlimited sources for Races, Classes, Feats and powers.

Now I have to wait till I Put my swashbuckler executioner assassin onto the table at level 3 sessions(I'll see the "What?" on the others faces.), Hehehe...
