| #1midnitepoisonFeb 02, 2009 13:36:47 | How do you stop people from reading your mind? and is there any way to have your character notice? Im a lv. 8 sorcerer whos a star elf. is there any way to prevent people from screwing wih my head? damaging them would be nice too... |
| #2baneofelvesFeb 02, 2009 13:51:11 | OK, seems like this is 3rd ed. Here's my advice: take Iron Will. Increase your wisdom. I'm not too sure about abilities that let you smack them back for that, but you should have a good will save since you're a sorcerer. Sense motive can help if you want to be able to tell when someone is under magical control, you have to make a high DC. But I think that if you know another person VERY WELL (lifelong friend or intimate relationship), you get a +10 bonus to your check. EDIT: Magic items can help a lot too |
| #3FireclaveFeb 02, 2009 14:41:57 | Increasing your Will saves is the simplest method. If you don't have a Cloak of Resistance, the Greater and Superior Resistance spells (both from the Spell Compendium) add substantial resistance bonuses to all your save and last for hours, which makes useful for more than just blocking mind reading. Ruin Delver's Fortune (which is also in the SC) is similar in this regard, but adds your Charisma bonus to saves as an immediate action, and stacks with resistance bonuses. Though the item you may want to put on your wish list for the long term is the Third Eye of Conceal. At 120,000gp, it's probably far out of your reach right now, but it grants nigh impenetrable immunity to mind reading and similar effects. Buying this instead of using a precious 8th spell known to learn Mind Blank may be worth the hefty price tag. A Mind Crystal Anchor can be used to as a buffer against powers of the Telepathy discipline, such as Read Thoughts and Mind Probe, though the nature of the item probably makes its use more suited in relatively safe and stable locations such as at camp, in a stronghold, instead of out on the battlefield. Just beware characters wielding a Torc of Free Will. |
| #4innabinderFeb 02, 2009 14:57:59 | 1) Spend 3000 GP. 2) Buy a scroll of Mind Blank. 3) Temporarily boost your CL and/or CHA and/or UMD to use said scroll without possibility of mishap. 4) Repeat as necessary. |
| #5midnitepoisonFeb 02, 2009 15:59:01 | the thing is, my party member is trying to read my mind! i dont trust him in the slightest. though he roleplays well, he occasionally makes slips that lets me know that hes lying. the best part? he doest even realize that hes doing it. all i know, if he tries to betray my party, i will light him on fire with a fireball spell. and he has 25 HP |

| #7midnitepoisonFeb 02, 2009 16:41:14 | okay, ill try. he just gets reaaalllllyyy offended if people do that.. |
| #8SilentQFeb 02, 2009 16:47:27 | okay, ill try. he just gets reaaalllllyyy offended if people do that.. If that is the case, then he is being counter-productive to the group, and therefore should not be playing. |

No amount of IC solutions can fix OOC issues. As others have said, you need to confront this player, let him know that he is making the game less fun for you (because he might not even realize you have a problem with his roleplaying), and ask him to stop. D&D is a cooperative game and everyone at the table should be having fun. You might also want to ask your DM about his position on PVP. Hopefully, your DM has an anti-PVP policy and will automatically step in if a player gets out of hand. |
| #11sallaFeb 02, 2009 18:07:47 | okay, ill try. he just gets reaaalllllyyy offended if people do that.. That's his problem. |
| #12baneofelvesFeb 02, 2009 19:52:14 | okay, ill try. he just gets reaaalllllyyy offended if people do that.. calmly explain to him that it's reducing your fun in the game. It sounds like he's being an ass, if he gets upset over you politely explaining that, then maybe he'll get booted out. If he accepts the criticism and stops the disruptive behavior, then maybe things will work out. If he gets defensive, then ask why, since you aren't attacking him, merely stating how you feel. And if he says any bullcrap about "I'm in character" then maybe he needs another concept. There's no justifiable reason to play a character that annoys everyone else. |

(he cant resist the spell being put in him while asleep, I think) |
| #15sallaFeb 02, 2009 20:51:27 | Another thought: Next time he reads your character's thoughts, tell him he recieves, "It's a good thing that I trust (character name). If I thought for a moment he was violating my mind for grits and shins, I'd fireball his face off." |
| #16jaz0nFeb 02, 2009 20:54:38 | I think you can get permanent mind blank installed for a small fortune. lol while i think that's pretty brilliant (for the record, you're considered "willing" when you're unconscious), unfortunately, it'll only work as a deterrent until he's high enough level that fireball won't kill him. |

| #18midnitepoisonFeb 10, 2009 12:11:52 | the ring of mind shielding sounds good. i think im going to go with that. thanks! though the funny thing is, we're at 8th level and he still only has 25 Hp. i have 40, and Im also a caster (sorcerer5/blood magus3) |
| #19chaosturtleFeb 11, 2009 9:33:01 | blood magus are cool...what class is he anyway where he can read your mind, because if he's just a wizard and he's wasting his slots on a spell just to use against pcs that's kind of a huge issue...even if he is a psion or something, he's wasting pp that should be better spent on hurting enemies, not spying on other pcs. Also...why is he reading your mind? Is there some specific thing he's trying to learn? Just start thinking really weird thoughts, maybe he'll stop. Man, I'd love to have sex with that tree for example. |
| #20midnitepoisonFeb 11, 2009 14:03:17 | thats a good one, ill try it! the funny thing about my Pc is that shes 30. and an elf. 30 in elf = 13-15 in human..... good times.... |
| #21sallaFeb 11, 2009 14:05:53 | thats a good one, ill try it! the funny thing about my Pc is that shes 30. and an elf. 30 in elf = 13-15 in human..... good times.... Not really, no. Elves start aging more slowly after puberty; they aren't toddlers for a decade. So, 30 in elf is more like 25 for human. |
| #22midnitepoisonFeb 11, 2009 14:18:47 | really? i checked the PHB and that what it said....hmmm. maybe ill read over it again. |
| #23Chiba_MonkeyFeb 11, 2009 17:33:42 | The PHB doesn't go into that kind of detail about elven lifespans. Races of the Wild says that elves age like humans until after puberty, so they remain in their "twenties" until about the age of 200. |

Actually elves(3.5) finish thier "filling out" and full adult growth at age 25. Where as humans do so at age 20. The 110 years stated in the PHB1 is the age that most elves start adventuring. More information can be found in Races of the Wild(3.5), page 13: "Elves and Adulthood" Sidebar(bottom bar actually heh). Edit: Replying as a read for the win! |

While huamns may be considered "adults" and ready for adventuring at age 15(as per PHB), they haven't finished "filling out" or their full adult growth until age 20(as per extended fluff-info in RotW). ![]() |

Thou hast quoted elven stuff, rather than human stuff. My point still stands, as there has not been shown any real refutation. ;) Anyways, becoming a type of creature immune to mind-affecting effects like undead would do the trick, too. |
| #28Chiba_MonkeyFeb 13, 2009 10:01:39 | Anyways, becoming a type of creature immune to mind-affecting effects like undead would do the trick, too. Except that the OP's character is an elf, and (most) elves hate undead. View them as a perversion of nature. |
| #29m-barkFeb 13, 2009 10:10:34 | Except that the OP's character is an elf, and (most) elves hate undead. View them as a perversion of nature. I take your bullet, and counter with Deathless. Surely an elf would not mind becoming one of them. ;) Also, elves in general don't hate undead. Good-aligned divine magic users, certainly, and many elf culture, but not in general. |
| #30McnancyFeb 13, 2009 15:49:09 | There is a feat in Unearthed Arcana called Live My Nightmare, it makes it so if someone uses anysort of divination on you they have to make a will save or die. I doubt the player would continue reading your mind if they could die from doing it, and if they do die then it was their fault. If you tell your DM you want to take this feat in order to put an end to your conflict, the DM might let you take it and even chalk up the feat's reqs as char backround. |
| #31pyro_azerFeb 13, 2009 18:31:03 | necropolitan template is the easiest way i know of to get the undead type which would render you immune to mind affects. |
