Getting back into DnD, Living Forgotten Realms...

I've been absent from the DnD scene for a few about half a year now. My last game was DnD Next, which fell apart after Christmas.

A friend of mine recently wanted to try out DnD. I told him I was a bit too busy right now to run a game and that I couldn't find any players. Which is true because I'm currently running a different system game.

To make a long story short we found ourselves at our FLGS(Friendly Local Game Store) and he was talking about wondering how it would be to play DnD. Then the cashier said that the Wednesday Living Forgotten Realms game is looking to start back at lvl1. And asked if we would be interested. We put our names down and we are expecting an email if she finds enough players.

So here is the problem. I haven't played DnD 4e in about a year and a half. Also I played Dark Sun, which I think is a lot different than Forgotten Realms.

  • My planned character is a Thrii-Kreen Battlemind named Skar(Why? Because its simple enough to be remembered). He was part of a small hunting party, until they were attacked by a Dragon in the Anauroch Desert(I like deserts). The entire party was scattered and Skar believes he is the last one alive. As such he has turned to mercenary work, taking jobs that no one else wants. Some say he has a death wish, but those that have actually sat down with him know that he constantly has an antenna open for news of his fallen comrades' return or the location of the dragon that killed them.

I've never played Living Forgotten Realms, in fact it is probably one of my least favorite settings. Does this character work? ie

  • Psionics? Am I likely to be asked to switch to something else? I know a few DMs who hated psionics from 3.5e and still haven't gotten over it.

  • Power Gaming? Does the Thrii-Kreen Battlemind build scream power gamer or Min/Maxer? If I remember correctly its not a recommended combination, but I am never too sure.

  • Thrii-Kreen? Will this be so foreign to Forgotten Realms that I should switch to a different race? I already know that their was a Mul in the game sometime ago.

1) shouldn't. DMs can have their opinions, but 3.5 and 4e are different games.

2) nothing about an early heroic battlemind screams optimised. Whether you will be more optimised than some newbie is hard to say. Actually, almost nothing at level one screams optimised to me, more than any class plus human race.

3) shouldn't. DMs can have their opinions.

Organized play like LFR might have some specific rules governing allowable races, classes, and other options. Be sure to request that info before showing up to play.

You should be okay. Thri-Kreen aren't published in Forgotten Realms, but there are weirder races out there (Shardmind springs to mind) and they aren't illegal according to the official campaign documentation (found on livingforgottenrealms.com). In fact, there's an adventure where the players encounter a Thri-Kreen clutch in the Calimshan desert who are trying to kill a metallic dragon. It's called CALI3-3 I believe, and can be found on the same website I mentioned. Might be fun for you to play that adventure someday (it's even part of a trilogy).
