But .. hm So im going to explain something about my dm and our friends ... its sad and pathetic but we never manage to get to our 4th sessions we usualy do 1 or 2 then move on to another campaign ... its a mother... but our record is 5 sessions of 1... i dont know why but i stated this fact to help explain my rut...
Rut Explanation; LOL... so Everytime i play dnd i try to play a different character.... i try to be as open minded as i can playing... ive been playing for 7 years now and ive played all of the classes many times and alot of the bonus classes and of course i have a couple classes i like the most... im an extremist and can never find balance in my life and its reflected in my dnd sessions ... although these arent the characters i always play, these 2 are my favorites.... The Wizard... Smart as can be... And the Barbarian Slightly smarter than a brick and Strong as an OX... I always try being somthing ive never been before these days... and its at the point where im not having to much fun... i know a huge part of it is our incredibly short campaigns.... but the only people i know who play dnd our my close personal friends... they still enjoy it but not i. I find myself getting bored of all my characters probly cause i feel no connection.. I dont have enough play time to build relationships with other characters ... explore my owns mind and i dont have the satisfaction of start at 1 and devolping my character into a powerful one ...
one problem specificly is that ive already made all the characters im going to enjoy a few times already and they are all resulted in short lived campaigns...now i wander aimlessly alongside my friends in dnd bored... eating my my cheetos and drinking my soda... thinking ... i wanna go play Xbox

For some reason, I have this nigh-irresistible urge to make every one of my characters an immensely obese man with copious facial and body hair who speaks in a bad cockney accent. Does anyone else fall in to character patterns like this? Just wondering if I'm on my own in this.
Sorta.
I used to make all my characters have something wrong with their face. It could have been something as simple as a scar or albinism all the way up to horrendeous Freddy Krueger-esque burns. I stopped when a fellow player pointed out my pattern. I never even realized it.

Not quite as percise, but my characters usually end up being 'enigmatic individuals that takes a hard line with individuals and carries a chip on their shoulder.'
After noticing this, I've tried breaking this pattern by playing a soft-spoken goodwilled mousy individual who never tries speaking up for himself.
I suppose, for advice, it should be relatively simple to break a pattern once you're aware of it. Just make something that is counter to what you usually play.
Try playing a frail, sickly character that seems to always be afflicted with some ailment. Or try being the standard heroic individual who seems perfect in every way but had to sacrifice a childhood sweetheart to obtain this perceived perfection.
Or whatever strikes your fancy.
i've only really seen a few to a proper "the end".
so many characters were left by the wayside... 2 versions of Esker (a shapeshifter, original was a druid, the second a transmuter), dolph craghammer (a fatherly dwarf cleric who's first quest never ended),ect... sigh.
even then, there are some characters i just really like to play: Abraham Dollco (who i've remade for 4th ed as a swordmage) & Edward Copperhead (who will probably be redone as a barbarian in 4th) to name a few.
My characters all tend to talk a lot. I like the roleplaying aspect the most.
I, of course, love battle as well.
For instance-
Cain is a CN selfish ***. He likes money, fine dining, and showing off. However, if his friends are in danger... he will not hesitate to get in the fray and help.
Abel is a LG nice guy. He helps the helpless, rescues kittens, and puts his life on the line for the greater good. He does have a dark secret, however. Something that he prays for forgiveness for every night and that made Cain's life a veritable HELL. Cain does not know this, though.
See? Different.

Ok, so Cain has red eyes and Abel has white hair.
If my characters were a testament to real-world albinism percentiles, 90% of friggin EVERYONE would have the condition.
Oh, and I also like awesome face scars. They are just so COOL.

But I broke out of that "rut" and went back to male characters; like my current Xen'drik drow swordmage. He is the epitome of manliness. Lol. I modeled him after Ronon from Stargate Atlantis.
Anyways, I suddenly find myself with an urge to go back to female characters, but this time with a bit more masculine undertone. Maybe a statuesque/beefy female goliath warden with patternless gray skin and a mohawk ponytail (both sides of head shaved except for middle). She'd take no prisoners, even in the bedroll. ;) buahahaha
I also miss my old 3.5 bard. She was a REAL piece of work. Epic awesomeness.
The original poster's characters remind me a lot of Yangus from Dragon Quest 8.

I, too, suffer from the urge to play a habitual character. I tend to roll up female PCs ... ALOT. Yes, I am a transvirtual player.
Well, me and some of my friends came to the realization that this is the way to do things in video game land, as you end up spending a lot of time looking at your avatar's butt anyways. :embarrass After spending so much time DMing, I see no problem RPing an opposite gender character.
My only rut, if I actually have one, is I always end up playing wizards who aren't the typical "pale-skinned nerds with no social skills that hides behind others." It started with my gnome, who was sort of like Monk (from the TV show) as a crossbow expert. Then my wise-cracking changeling illusionist who actually used a spiked gauntlet a few times. Finally, my current character, a human wizard from a chain of tropical islands who likes to get into melee and isn't happy just reading about things in books (he's gotta see 'em personally).
Edit: God, forgot about my other current character in the off-and-on epic game...a wizard king planeshifter who plans on opening a planar casino. I *am* in a rut.
