Hi,

I was thinking on getting drunk with a group of my companions. However, I am not talking about a few drinks to smooth the way. But the level of alcohol poisoning. Confusing, clammy skin, possibly even seizures.

How is alcohol poisoning handled in D&D 4e?

In addition, another character is self medicating through alcohol after a run in with a demon.

Any ideas on how to deal with alcoholism in game?

You don't really need statistical adjustments for that, because the character will be utterly incapacitated if he's confused and is having seizures.  Just apply the Helpless condition.

I wouldn't deal with alcoholism in a game; it's a very serious subject (many people have had a friend or relative's life ruined by alcoholism) and should not be taken lightly.

You say "I am drunk now" and roleplay your character approperiatley. If you decide your group is mature enough to deal with alcoholism (it probably ins't) don't include rules. Just have the character regulalrly holding a drink or make extra plans to make sure there is a booze ration to last the whole journey at the expense of important things. (not enough room for water and hot weather gear this desert crossing, I needed my drinks)

Pretty easy to tell you're too young to drink or you've never been drunk (enough).

First, when you're drunk, everything seems like a good idea, (negative penalties to will / wisdom / insight.)  Then you're convinced you're a karaoke superstar, or a dance robot from the future sent back in time to groove. (imaginary ineffective bonuses to bluff / diplomacy / charisma.  All fat chicks in vicinity receive +20 to charisma)  Then when the lights come on and bouncers shove you out the door everything tastes awesome.  Especially horrible food sold by street vendors that fall miles short of minimum state food-health regulations.

Also, most people, most normal people will vomit long before they get to bad stages of alcohol poisoning.  (Farewell healing surges).  Binge drinkers and long term alcoholics are more likely to deal with these things, like the dt's.

Later when you wake up your hearing becomes superhuman, and the sound of flies farting will feel like a percussion orchestra is playing between your ear lobes.

Kids...

I dunno why you'd wanna roleplay something so mundane as being drunk.  If I wanna rp being drunk I just larp it, with a 12 pack of Sam Adams.

I imagine that you could treat it sort of like fatigue (see CALI 3-3 or other various LFR mods where this is a factor).  You accumulate more and more intoxication points until the final effect is unconsciousness.

Salla's warning is worth noting, though.  This could be a delicate subject for some people.

We are all past our teens. I believe the average age is 25, however our GM is 50+.

I've personally been had my stomach pumped due to alcohol poisoning once when I was 19. I have been in the hospital several times for the usual cuts, scrapes and bruises due to drinking and falling down. Had a concusion once when I fell down some stairs.

Since I was 26, I usually black out when I drink. Which has lead to some ackward social situations, not to mention breakups

So, now that we have established from the probativly intrusive questions that I am not "inexperienced".

In addition, neither are the rest of the players. We come from a vast variety of personal and roleplaying experiences.

I like geoffa's response, and will probably be using a fatigue based system. Where I will be rolling constitution at ever increasing minuses.

It's a poison. That's why dwarves fight it off so well.

Here's something to think about: Alcohol is not the happy pill that it is shown as in frat-boy party movies. It's a mood intensifier. If you are happy, you get WAAAAYYYYY Happy. If you are angry, you get seriously ticked off and agressive, not just at whatever had you angry in the first place, but at everything in the world. If you are depressed... yeah. You figure it out.

Vow of the 20-something the morning after: "I'll neverrr get thish drunk again" (vomit)
Comment of the 30-somthing the morning after: "I usshed to be able to drink more..."
