To change the rules a bit do this: Do not worry about ability requirements for classes; we won't be using them. And make them all human, introduce the other races as needed. Allow them to pick how to prioritize their attributes (which score is most important, next most, and so on) When they've done that, they then pick one of the secondary skills that both serve as a background for the character and helps them decide what their characters know (I took away gambler as I felt it was too mature a topic.) Do not let them worry about things such as THAC0 and encumberance. Just let them roll the dice (low for ability checks, and high for to hits), and let them know when they are going to be carrying too much or going to lift too much, or whether or not their PC knows anything. Keep the game relatively rules free (especially for them) Keep the game rather freeform, letting the players decide some of the aspects of the world (as per the cooperative gaming section in 4E DMG2.) Focus more on the story (including some fantasy if you wish) rather than on combat, making sure to keep the rules simple and to the point. Just started playing with my 7-8 year old doing that and she seems to like it alot. Her PC STR 14, DEX 10, CON 15, INT 14, WIS 12, CHA 7 SECONDARY SKILL: Farmer - Agriculture - Weathersense POSSESIONS Common gown, sandals, sash, knife with sheath She is currently in town buying some supplies for her parent's farm, soon I'll be introducing her to her enemy (she picked that) where a I may decide whether there should be some combat. Eventually, she'll find an object that she'll need to take to Big City (she named that too) to get it identified; in the journey I'll introduce her to some more difficult encounters (goblins, a wolf or two) and I might get some more insight into how she wants to develop the character. |
