I am trying to build a decent fighter mage for our newest campaign. The DM made a rule to where we have to play something we haven't done before. I've never done a hybrid before. My question is, what PrCs work well for this sort of thing without killing my spell progression? Also, any opinions on these?
Eldritch Knight?
Spellsword?

Any others I should look at (please give me a reference to where I can find it.)?

Assuming you meant Paragon Path, instead of Prestige class, I believe the default recommendation is Wizard of the Spiral Tower. It's basically your "wizard with a sword" concept.

Assuming you actually meant Prestige Class, I direct you here.

Actually, Zherog and I are trying to keep the Player Advice forum (this one) as edition-neutral as possible. Feel free to post your 3.5 Edition questions here as well.

I'm not much for hybrid casters (or any 3.5 casters, with the notable exception of the Beguiler), but I will say it will help immensely if we know what resources your DM is allowing you to use. There's no point in directing you to a Duskblade, for example, if PHB2 is not on the approved materials list.

Also, do you want to be primarily a caster with a bit of martial prowess, a martial type enhanced by a bit of magic, or an even split? The last option is what kills your effectiveness, particularly at higher levels.

A few possible options:
  • Duskblade, from PHB2, offers a decent progression, spontaneous casting, and no ASF while casting spells off the Duskblade class list.
  • The Battle Sorcerer variant (first presented in Unearthed Arcana, now part of the OGL) is a decent melee fighter with the same spell progression as a sorcerer, but with fewer spells per day. I compared this guy to a full 10/10 fighter/sorcerer shortly after UA was released, the the battle sorcerer comes out on top in terms of HP, BAB, and spell levels available (they can cast 9th level spells)

Beyond that, I'm tapped. As someone who favors rogues, the bewildering array of gish builds was never something I payed much attention.

I'm not too familiar with the eldritch knight or spellsword, but you might want to look at the Shielded Caster feat from Races of Stone: spellcasting while using a shield doesn't provoke in melee.
