| #1SolandrosSep 28, 2015 11:01:09 | So we recently arrived in Thundertree and have learned about a Green Dragon problem, to avoid spoilers this is what we know: There are Blights, zombies, cultists who might either be necromancers or dragon worshipers and the obvious green threat. We expect the green dragon to leave us alone as long as we don't mess with it or its tower lair but we're toying with potential idea's to take it out regardless.
Our party composition is as follows:
Fighter Battle Master Dragonborn (silver) Sorcerer Draconic ancestry (fire), Tiefling Bard (college of lore) Wood Elf Monk (shadows) Half Elf Rogue (Arcane Trickster) Gnome
All are level 3.
One idea we've been toying with is casting enlarge and bears endurance on the fighter to even out the size and strength difference, and then pin the dragon so it can't get away. There are a few questions we have about this though which I'm hoping you guys can help us with :D
Can a dragon fly away while grappled? Can the grappled person still attack while grappled? Can the grappler still attack while grappling? Is the breath attack still a threat? If either party can attack, do they attack touch AC or the normal AC? Are there any actions apart from grappling that the grappler can do during the grapple like choking the target? Would it be possible to, after succesful grappling the dragon one turn, using the shove action in the next turn to knock it prone and then using the fighters action surge to grapple it again while its prone? Would above action keep it prone untill it escaped the grapple?
Please keep in mind the fighter does not have the grappler feat
EDIT: Also, every character still has their inspiration die from dealing with the red brands which they could use to sabotage the dragons escape rolls |

The idea being, the Fighter knocks the dragon into damage; the dragon gets up and moves (slowly) out of it. The Fighter knocks him back in.
To save the Fighter some embarrassment, you should try to obtain a Scroll of Feather Fall and read it over him just before the fight. Never go against a dragon without preparing. And the look on the DM's face when he realizes he HASN'T just insta-slain you by dropping you from a height...
If your DM is generous and lets there be a rainstorm near the dragon's tower, the Lightning Bolt spell (3rd-level Wizard, name may be off) gains extra damage plus it can start from wherever it is cloudy. The dragon CAN'T "just fly away" if the whole sky is dark and overcast.

We'll also be trying to pick up some poison resist and poison immunity potions at neverwinter to help us deal with the breath attack without insta dying. The Arcane Trickster Rogue has used his 1 wizard spell outside the restricted schools to take feather fall. I do have few more questions now that the plan is starting to take shape though:
Wouldn't spells like Grease be a hazard to the fighter too? (I thought the grappler and grapplee would be on the same square if pinning) The dragon most likely has multiattack, does this mean it gets 2-3 attempts to break out the grapple or can it only use its normal action to try and do this? If the fighter doesn't attack the dragon whilest pinning him, will he be able to keep his shield and maitain his 20 AC? (splint+defensive fightingstyle+shield) Would a young adult green dragon already have access to magic and if so could he despell the enchantments buffing the fighter? |

As DM, if I can get the dragon in the air, then I'm going to strafe the ranged characters with dragon breath or other attacks and then take cover, repeating until the scales are tipped in the dragon's favor.
When I ran this adventure, I had the green dragon pretend it was a copper dragon named Patina who was cursed to lose its metallic shine by the druid in Thundertree. It tried to convince the characters to kill the druid to remove the curse. This deception made things interesting. |
