| #2DanTrackerSep 24, 2009 9:19:48 | i've got a swordmage at the table that makes up his own tattoos, gear, and powers. he runs them by me before we find someone to buy them from or train him or such. it was also fun for him to learn about creating a farbond blade. i had another swordmage teach him about an advanced meditation when bonding with a blade that used residuum in the ammount of the enchantment desired to generate the farbond effect. so now he can make a farbond with any of his own blades, but he couldn't sell those as farbond blades; they are bonded to only his character. also, he was looking to do something further on a blade for a power later after leveling up. he got a wizard to help him with the arcane study and meditation. i made a skill challenge using arcana skill. the wizard helped him to insribe arcane marks in the blade so that a lvl 5 power he created could be used through that implement. it really added a wonderful touch of development for his character, but it didn't make it harder for him to have what he sought. so he gets to make up his own powers and gear and tattoos. so far no other players have really gotten into customizing things, but at least they know that i allow it and encourage it. i'm planning to make one of his developed powers retain his name in lore. he might not see the impact of that for a time, but he'll eventually see it used with his character's name associated. |

| #4bageljaySep 24, 2009 13:03:18 | like Xykon's mildly inescapable forcecage? Actually there was a 3.5 book that talked about customizing your spells, like your magic missles all look like glowing skulls, or your fire spells were all blue flames, ect. As long as you're not changeing the effects of the spell (ie another person can still knowlege arcana [spellcraft in 3.x] to tell what you're doing) then it doesn't matter how you describe it. I've been using the warden's "thunder ram assault" as a thunderstomp in our 4e game. (the power reads if you hit then make a secondary attack burst 3) so i "attack" the ground with my unarmed attack (foot) and use the secondary burst to hit targets not ajacent to me (and knock them back). this is not how that encounter power was designed for, but it works for the rules, and adds a little different flavor. |
| #5ShiftkittySep 24, 2009 14:17:51 | Our Wizard, Uffgart, made "Uffy's Annoying Allergen". His player based it off of the Grease spell, slowing foes down while they sneezed their heads off, rubbed their reddened, watery eyes, etc. It was 2e, so the targets had to Save vs. Poison. For 3e, it was a Fort save. |
| #6chanter_houndSep 24, 2009 14:36:27 | For my gnoll bard, shout of triumph is renamed Bark of Triumph. Whenever i announce it, I say I bark really loudly. I hardly ever use it for combat, more to slide my allies out of danger. |

I hardly ever use it for combat, more to slide my allies out of danger. We've got a dragon born bard that does similar, all his close blast powers are modified dragon breath. |
| #8deacon_liadonSep 25, 2009 4:48:20 | I remember back in 3rd ed. I would customise spells and items all the time and name it for my character. |
| #9themocawSep 25, 2009 12:06:37 | My current Wizard is an eladrin from a culture based on feudal Japan. All her powers have been altered to feel more like the summoning of spirits from Japanese culture (Phantom Bolt, for instance, was renamed "Kitsune-tsuki," and flavored as a fox spirit causing a moment of temporary panic in a target and making them stumble around in a desired direction, and "Cloud of Daggers" became "Kamataichi's Slicing Wind," where a small weasel-like creature appears and starts sending wind daggers flying around). This, of course, is aside from such juvenile antics as removing the "e" from the "Reaping Strike" power card and replacing the flavor text with an infamous line spoken by a dog in an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. |
| #10MyckSep 25, 2009 12:29:58 | I had a character that was so obsessed with his appearance that he created a spell that would clean and mend his clothes, clean and style his hair, and clean and freshen his body (no sweaty B.O. after a fight). He called it MycKenzie's Makeover. If I remember correctly, it was a first level spell. This was back in 2nd Ed. when 0-level spells didn't exist otherwise it would probably been a 0-level spell since it's really just a few cantrips thrown together. |
| #11Mad_JackSep 26, 2009 23:06:02 | "Caerlin's Climactic Cataclysm", or "Dice roll, everyone dies...", lol A 9th level spell created by my mage Caerlin back in 3.5 that was essentially the D&D equivalent of a tac-nuke, designed as a battlefield spell since it had a 10-minute casting time. It was basically a big blue-and-silver combination of fireball and chain lightning with a fairly sizeable blast radius. Caerlin was a rather narcissistic and arrogant < bleep > who named all of her spells after herself and refused to cast invisibility because she couldn't figure out a way to be invisible in a loud and flashy manner, lol. Caerlin's Marvelous Magic Missile was a silver arrow with glowing blue wings on it. |

Pardon, and this might be a bit of a tanget, but which book says that? |
| #13cecil777Sep 27, 2009 1:55:48 | My wizard Cain had a special Magic Missle. He called it the "Disco Beam" and when he used it it made the room flash all different colors. Know what "Scorching Burst" was? Disco Inferno. Thing with Cain was that he liked to party. I customize enemy deaths too. My favorite thing to do was use "Reapers Touch" and flavor it so that Cain grabbed the opponent by the face and he exploded. Also he yelled "Shining Finger"! Cain was pretty concieted and referred to himself as "The Cain". As long as you don't change anything in the mechanics, flavor things however you like. My DM actually encourages that. |
| #14CaericSep 27, 2009 14:44:42 | I was once playing a gnome Bard|Wizard named Peregrin Thather; he went by the nickname "Pip." Well, he was an entertainer alike to Jim Darkmagic. He did not have magic missile however; he had Storm Pillar. Pip's Storm Pillar was not the same colouration as one might imagine a storm pillar. His storm pillar was technocoloured, launching bolts of red, purple, blue, green, and yellow lightning everywhere. It was his safest trick, since it only hurts enemies, during a show. His backstory actually kinda was based on the one Penny Arcade Darkmagic comic there was. Pip was doing a performance and decided to pull out the stops with the Rolling Ball of Fire. He had someone on stage stand as still as possible while he rolled it around them. They caught fire, along with the stage. And so, he was arrested. Broke out fairly quickly. Oh, that I could play that clever gnome again. |

when I DM, you may find someone selling 'instant magical makeovers' on the spot or, for a bit more cash, for on the go... that NPC might make a large sum of money with this... |
| #16grrpiSep 30, 2009 0:20:15 | No, but I once created a flavor spell called Sascha's Insatiable Libido. That was a good night. |
