| #1austinff7Aug 09, 2008 16:18:13 | On page 17 of the new players handbook there is a chart for ability modifiers it goes until 32-33 i thought the highst roll you could roll was 18 y is there 33![]() p.s does anyone live in woodbridge ontario i have no one here to play D&D with. |
| #2ValisilAug 09, 2008 16:39:12 | You gain increases to your ability scores as you level, and monsters often have high ability scores especially at higher level play. |
| #3Cohen95Aug 09, 2008 17:07:10 | Yeah, you can start as high as 20, and you get eight bumps, plus the DemiGod Epic Destiny allows you to buff another +2 to two stats, so you can have a 30, by level 28, in one stat. |
| #4jageAug 09, 2008 21:37:08 | Couldn't find anything "of Strength" in terms of magic items, but items and buffs that up your stats have been a part of D&D for a long time- unless these are definitivly out of 4e that is another way those mods would be relevant. (Anyone know?) |

(Anyone know?) Effects and magic items that modify ability scores don't exist in 4th edition. They might emerge again, but I remember reading that the devs wanted to avoid them if possible. |
| #6Cohen95Aug 10, 2008 1:27:16 | Effects and magic items that modify ability scores don't exist in 4th edition. They might emerge again, but I remember reading that the devs wanted to avoid them if possible. Yeah, I kind of figured that was the case. IIRC, in 3.X they toned down the things that magical buffs to stats affected. I don't remember specific examples, but there were things that you didn't get the benefit of a stat buff for (something like skill points per level, or the like). |
| #7drmorganesAug 10, 2008 7:42:33 | Gauntlets of Ogre Power are a prime example of the differences in magic items between 3.5 and 4E. In 3.5 they gave you a straight boost to Strength. In 4E, however, they grant a bonus to Strength-based skill checks but not attacks. Once per day you can get a boost to damage on an attack. |
| #8austinff7Aug 10, 2008 16:19:34 | thanks but i have another problem what does "misc" mean |
| #9korgoththepristAug 10, 2008 16:29:10 | Misc In this game is basicly something that Is Not allready listed. For Example The Dwarf +4 (Or +5?) vs Poison would Eather be considerd Race or Misc Mod. As a Rule Misc Mods are the Unnamed bonus you get to something. So Its Basicly Miscalanious? Or w/e. im not going to bother spell checking. |
| #10trismagestusAug 10, 2008 23:51:16 | Misc In this game is basicly something that Is Not allready listed. Dictionary: miscellaneous adj. 1. Made up of a variety of parts or ingredients. 2. Having a variety of characteristics, abilities, or appearances. 3. Concerned with diverse subjects or aspects. |
| #11austinff7Aug 14, 2008 11:46:02 | how do i know what my check bonus is ????????????????????????? |
| #12zaydracheAug 14, 2008 21:13:24 | Depends on whether you are talking ability checks or skill checks. Either way it is 1/2 level+base modifier for the check. So a strength check at level 2 with an 18 to strength would be +5 (1+4). Skills are the same but they add 1/2 level+relevant ability modifier+5 if trained. So if the same character who was trained in Athletics made an Athletics check it would be +10 (1+4+5). Hope this helps. |
| #13drmorganesAug 15, 2008 9:56:42 | This has been noted in other places, but I'll mention it here as well: Take the time to actually read your Player's Handbook from cover to cover. Do this at least once (I recommend twice) before even attempting to step through character creation. The book contains absolutely everything you need to know to create a character and participate as a player, but the information is presented in a structured manner. You will have to look in several places over several chapters to completely understand the process. If you're a veteran player to D&D, this is still (especially?) true. 4E is almost - but not quite - entirely different mechanically than D&D's 3rd Edition. After reading the PHB once (preferably twice), then sit down with a few blank character sheets and walk through Chapters 2 through 6 until you're comfortable with the character creation process. I think you'll have an easier time of it. |
| #14austinff7Aug 18, 2008 10:36:58 | can i wear a chain mail and a scale armor |
| #15zaydracheAug 18, 2008 11:18:18 | One armor per person. |
| #16rainkissAug 18, 2008 15:40:38 | can i wear a chain mail and a scale armor Sure, if you can carry the weight... But only the highest of the armor bonuses counts, and I'd have to assign some major penalties to your movement and any physical skills, since the two sets of armor aren't designed to move over each other. Why you'd want to is beyond me... (Remember, the key to DMing isn't "No," it's "Yes, but...") |
| #17Cohen95Aug 18, 2008 16:04:07 | can i wear a chain mail and a scale armor Yes, but you should remember that, while bonuses from similar sources (such as an "armor bonus") do not stack, penalties do. Wearing both Chain and Scale mail would give you +7 armor, -1 check penalty, -2 speed penalty, and would weigh 85 lbs. |
| #18austinff7Aug 18, 2008 21:35:08 | i mean could i wear my normal scale armor a +1 dwarven chainmail and a +1 blackiron scale armor |
| #19Cohen95Aug 18, 2008 23:16:34 | i mean could i wear my normal scale armor a +1 dwarven chainmail and a +1 blackiron scale armor Again, yes. Your armor bonus would be +8 (since enhancement bonuses, like armor bonuses, as well as all other "typed" bonuses in the game don't stack.), with a -1 check penalty, and a -2 speed penalty, and would still weigh 85 lbs. Note that you would only gain the magical benefit of whichever armor you put on first, because, as it states on p. 224 of the PHB under "Magic Item Categories" (something you'd know if you would read your PHB instead of simply browsing through it), "These are called item slots, and they provide a practical limit to the number of magic items you can wear and use. You can benefit from only one magic item that you wear in your arms slot even if, practically speaking, you can wear bracers and carry a shield at the same time. You benefit from the item you put on first; any other item you put in the same item slot doesn't function for you until you take off the first item. Sometimes there are physical limitations as well- you can't wear two helms at the same time." Perhaps, before asking further questions, you should earnestly try to find the answer in the book, lest the ~$35 you paid for it be effectively wasted. |
| #20austinff7Aug 19, 2008 21:58:16 | thanks, i have 1 more question when would i get a wyrmscale armor or a god plate armor? |
| #21DrWormAug 19, 2008 23:39:42 | thanks, i have 1 more question when would i get a wyrmscale armor or a god plate armor? When your DM gives it to you, or allows you to buy it. Feel lucky to start with full plate, as magical armor is not for PCs until higher levels. After all you need something to work towards. |
| #22Cohen95Aug 20, 2008 6:30:17 | thanks, i have 1 more question when would i get a wyrmscale armor or a god plate armor? Certain kinds of armor are made according to arcane and esoteric methods that involve weaving magic into the substance of the armor. These masterwork armors never appear except as magic armor (see page 227), and even then only at the highest levels (16th and above). The various kinds of masterwork armor fall into the same categories as mundane armor and have similar statistics, but they have a higher armor bonus than their mundane counterparts. The cost of masterwork armor is included in the cost of the magic armor. Further, the chart on p. 214 shows that Wyrmscale has a minimum enhancement of +4, and Godplate a +6. The Magic Armor charts on p. 228 show that +4 armors are level 16+ while +6 armors are level 26+ This is the last serious answer you're getting from me for a question you could have found the answer to without even trying. Read your PHB. |
