I'd also ensure you get books of the same edition. There are a few that are fairly popular right now, and the books aren't really compatable. Pathfinder, 3.5, 4e, essentials are your big ones right now. They also reprinted some 2nd edition things so careful about that. 5e is also pending release, and so you might hear some things about that.
My best advice? Go to a local game shop and ask the people behind the counter what you should buy. Ask them for the "Core books" and some accessories they consider mandatory. They will get you going in the right direction.
Oh, also, you need a couple sets of dice. I'd go with 1-3 sets and then one box of d6. http://www.amazon.com/Polyhedral-7-Die-Translucent-Dice-Set/dp/B000RZLRW8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387420242&sr=8-1&keywords=dungeons+and+dragons+dicehttp://www.amazon.com/Polyhedral-7-Die-Translucent-Dice-Set/dp/B000RZLRW8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387420242&sr=8-1&keywords=dungeons+and+dragons+dice

Most D&D players are happy to help a new guy get into the hobby.
I'd recommend starting with 4e Essentials; it's a relatively easy and cheap way to get into D&D.
Are you planning to be playing or DMing?
If you're getting into it as just a player, you don't need much (in fact, you could probably borrow books from other players to start) apart from dice (the 7 piece set which includes d4-d20 - I prefer to have at least three or four sets just so I can quickly roll 3dX all at once, and so I can swap out my d20 if it's misbehaving), pencil, eraser, and character sheets.
For books, as a player, I'd recommend just picking up either Heroes of the Fallen Lands or Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdom. They're both basic Essentials books that have some basic rules and with enough content to make a character.
If you're trying to run your own game, you'll need a bit more stuff. For books, you'll probably need a DM book such as the Dungeon Master's Guide, a monster book such as the Monsters Vault, and something containing the rules such as the Rules Compendium or PHB1. You'll also need a map and either minis or tokens. To start, I'd recommend getting a 1" square battle mat and making your own tokens out of cardstock or something.
Another option is to put your money towards a DDI subscription, which gives you access to a character builder that makes creating characters much easier and a compendium which has pretty much all the content for 4e ever produced (you'll still need to pick up the rules somewhere, in either the RC or PHB1 or something). |

If you want free stuff, 3.5 is "free" in that the d20srd.org exists, and is legally an option. Give you taste. |
