HELP! I'm trapped in a Handy Haversack and can't get out!

I'm playing a level 21 Warforged Fighter/Barbarian/Warforged Juggernaut/Demigod. In my campaign today, my character was put into a handy haversack. When the sack was closed, there was a minor argument at the table over whether or not my character could get out of the said bag without the owner opening the bag and letting my character out. I was wondering if this forum could answer this question for us.

EDIT: This is a 4th edition campaign, if that matters.

UPDATE: The character who put my warforged into the bag died in combat. Instead of giving his character a traditionally funeral, my warforged decided to to stuff the corpse into the character's bag of holding. Then my warforged had random animals defecate into said bag, and then had the bag chucked off a cliff. So really, it was victory for everyone! :D

This is one of those things the DM will need to make a call on. Me? I'd let you get out by yourself without a problem just because it's lame to trap you in a freakin' storage device. If someone were trying to hold the top shut and was actively opposing your escape, I'd call for STR rolls (which I'd wager you'd win ...).

Man... that's one hefty haversack, I didn't know they made them that big...

As a DM myself, I would go with whatever seems like it would be the most fun for the player. If this is one player trying to keep another player in their backpack indefinitely... well then, that's rude beyond belief, and I would allow the PC in the bag to at least have a fighting chance with an ability roll (or automatic success if the PC keeping him in the bag was doing it just for kicks and not for some legitimate character based reason) to get himself out of there.

You encounter Unpnup, a 2ft tall agoraphobic goblin, who keeps the inventory of the haversack (because - as every one knows - every extradimentional storage space as a small goblin archevist. normally though, you can only meet them if you turn the bag inside out ... ).

Now, with a successfull diplomacy check, he'll open the handy haversack, if you promess to get him a bag af brownies.

Honestly, if somebody in the Haversack can't open it on their own, what's to stop the party from just trying to grab every physically weak monster they encounter and stuffing them in the bag until they suffocate, y'know?

In every previous edition I've played, we've always had the explicitly stated houserule that anyone inside a storage device of any sort can open it from inside *unless it's physically tied/locked/otherwise-nailed-shut*...
Some of the greatest stories of previous editions involve a halfling in a bag of holding tossed over a wall. Hell, one DM let us get away with putting two halfling rogues and a gnome illusionist onto the 15th floor of an enemy tower with a large bag tied to a rock and a well-aimed catapult shot.

On a side note, this...

...is the greatest thing I have read all week. :D That's hysterical.

Mmmm... cookie. *munches on it a bit before remembering that this type of cookie gets stashed in his memory somewhere with a stack of hundreds of other like cookies that stand as a monument to luck with words*

More or less the situation...

With that being the case: it is time to think about how you feel about this sort of behavior - and more than likely time to have a talk with the player that is trying, even in jest, to prevent someone else from truly participating in the game.

I don't mean having a talk as in telling the player off for it though... really just sitting down with both players to ask why this situation has come up, and how they each feel about it, and trying to find a peaceful resolution that allows the game to continue on with little to no hard feelings - I would hate to see one of your players start to have less enjoyment from your game because another player is keeping them in a haversack and not letting them get any time to really shine as their character.

I can't conceive of any way a Warforged Juggernaut could even fit through the opening of a Heward's Handy Haversack, even if the haversack had enough volume to hold it - - which I don't believe it does. Portable hole, maybe, but not the haversack. And how does anyone get a Warforged Juggernaut to go anywhere he doesn't want to, anyway? At any rate, the haversack, like a bag of holding, can be torn by sharp objects if care is not taken, so my suggestion is that you rip your way out - - they won't be sticking you into that particular container again.

I'm just not fond of 'Holding' abuses. So, I'd rule that the character could open the Bag (or Haversack) from the inside provided it wasn't sealed shut and/or he could cut his way out. And just because I don't like the 'stuff a character in a bag' routine... if the character opted to stab his way out and the offending 'stuffer' was wearing the haversack, I'd give the stab attempt a 50/50 of going straight into the character's back. I might even call that an accidental backstab or an auto-crit depending on what kind of cutting tool was used.

My advice to the OP... pose these possibilities to the DM along with the rules about cutting your way out of a bag, then take your largest, nastiest, magical bladed implement, buff it to the max (if possible) and stab through the bag as hard as you can. If the 'stuffer' gets impaled - oh well...

See if you can't cut your way out.

Failing that, find a new DM/group.

More or less the situation...

Then your DM should be smacked about with a large trout, old-school AOL style.

Often, a player just needs to ask a DM if they can use a specific ability in their character sheet. If a DM allowed this nonsense, then you can just ask "can I roll on X ability to get out?" and next thing they know, you've set the sack aflame or made an extradimensional space within the extradimensional space and destroyed the entire universe.

The player(s) who did this to your character and/or the GM need to be talked to. It doesn't sound like this is the sort of hilarious one-off event which adds memorable joy to the game, but more like one or more of the players having some sort of power trip. It falls under the same category as players who rob and kill other characters and call it "role-playing." It's just not acceptable table behavior, and you shouldn't tolerate it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go stuff my Revenant NPCs into a Bag of Holding so I can ambush my PCs...

Isn't a handy haversack the same as a bag of holding (esentially)? If so, bargain forth that destroying the sack would cause you to be sent to another plane or such. :P

Well, you better hurry and figure out something...

"A living creature put in a bag of holding will suffocate after about 10 minutes.

If a bag of holding is overloaded, or if a sharp object pierces it (from outside or inside), the bag will rupture and be ruined, the contents lost forever in non-space."

Also, how the heck did he get you in there anyway? Last I checked, a handy haversack can't hold more than 80 pounds.

That's 3E. In 4E, a bag of holding can hold (IIRC) 200lbs, and the are no rules regarding it's destruction or planar travel. Even so, there's no way that the Warforged could have gotten inside it to begin with, much less be forced inside, and even assuming he did get inside, he would far outweigh the bag's capacity. Simply put, a handy haversack or back of holding is utterly incapable of containing a warforged.

More or less the situation...

Here is what I would do... Smack the player who did this to you... Ok, not the best of ideas, but it would get the point across :P .

Really, if he is doing this on purpose, even in fun, it is not cool. Not being able to play is about the same as the DM saying "I ban you from the table." Talk to him/her, and if they won't let you out, then ask another player to stuff that person in the same bag with your PC so you can smack him/her around.

Or, better yet, have the DM kill off that player's character to see if they like not being able to play someone they put time in.

1. The sack is shaped like a normal one pound backpack. How the hell can anyone pick you up and get inside? I would make it a DC 30 Acrobatics check to get a warforged inside...

2. This is not 1E or 2E or 3E. There is no mention of "extra dimensions" or anything else, RAW. It is is still just a backpack. It just is roomier on the outside, and weighs less on the outside. Take out your sword, cut it open, done deal.

3. It does not "close" or "seal" in any way. It makes no mention of the bearer "summoning" out its contents. So, roll that same DC 30 Acrobatics check to get out, if you don't want to cut your way out.

Again, this is not first edition rules anymore.

The 4E haversack can hold half-a-ton (1000 lb.) and the opening adjusts to fit around whatever you put in it. So, if it's a 4E handy haversack you most certainly COULD put a Warforged into it.

My advice? Talk to the DM. If he doesn't rule in your favor and says it's impossible to escape, bide your time... they'll need you out eventually to deal with something. Then while they're weak and worn down after the fight stuff the offending PC and those who sat by and did nothing into the Haversack and wait for them to suffocate. Explain that the Warforged was just trying to duplicate the "fun" and forgot that the pathetic soft-skins needed to breathe. Then sell their stuff for platinum detailing and adorn your armor with parts of their corpses.

We're talking about 4th edition rules.
First off, Warforged can't suffocate, they don't need to breathe.
Secondly, 4e Handy Haversacks can hold up to 1000 lbs of gear. If it were a 4e Bag of Holding, he'd be fine, because they only hold 200 lbs, well below what a warforged+gear would weigh with any type of armor on. ESPECIALLY if he took the Warforged Juggernaut paragon path. Unfortunately, the Handy Haversack can basically hold the weight of 3-4 characters.

To the OP: your DM should make a ruling. If I was your DM, it would require an Acrobatics check DC 25 if the bag was tied shut, or an acrobatics check DC 15 if it wasn't.

It seems WAY too overpowered for a Handy Haversack to be enough to permanently hold someone against their will. If that were the case, how come every dungeon doesn't just use Handy Haversacks to make sure that prisoners don't escape?

To chime in, if your DM lets you abuse this misruling, use it against him and throw his NPC's inside the sack until he realizes how wrong he was...

My first question is: Who owns the Haversack?

If the "rude" PC owns it then, as a GM, I'd explore a couple of options.
1) The Warforged cuts his way out, ruining the Haversack and spilling it's contents on the ground around the recently escaped Warforged.

2) The Warforged uses a strength check to open the bag and escape.

If the party owns the Haversack, then I would only allow option #2.

Additionally, I would take the player of the Warforged aside to confer privately - because his character is alone and nobody knows what he is doing. I would hint or outright suggest that he could/should rumage around and see if that "rude" PC has any cool stuff he wants...

Lastly in the case of the "rude" PC owns the Haversack, I would give the Warforged player the choice of either destroying the container or not. If the Warforged decided it wanted to keep the device that had recently imprisoned him...well, that's perfectly understandable.

In my mind - fun always trumps RaW. "Fun" as defined as fun for everyone present at the table. This is especially true when it's not a plot-deciding sort of situation like this is.

Perhaps these thoughts may seem strong, but even though I am a new (and rather inexperienced) GM my one rule is that nobody impinges on the fun of someone else.

Now, if the player playing the Warforged is enjoying himself with the practical joke of waking up in a Haversack, that's a whole different thing. I'd happily let to characters practical joke each other all day, making them roll when appropriate as long as both were enjoying themselves and they weren't detracting from the other people's fun.

However, that doesn't seem to be the case here...

- first, find out *exactly* what was in the haversack when he put you in. All of that stuff is now your stuff, if you want it. Don't let him retcon it - I doubt that he emptied the haversack in preparation for trapping you in there, but I guarantee he'll claim that he did. Talk with the DM about this one first.
- second, even if the DM rules that he can trap you in there, he basically has the choice to either leave you in there forever (and thus not have access to the haversack or anything in it) or open the sack to get something at some point (at which point you can claw your way out.
- third, he's on something of a power trip. I suspect that once you let him have his power trip, and let him gloat, he'll let you back out again relatively soon. If nothing else, convince the DM to throw a few tough fights at the party that assume that you're still there.
- Finally, he has to sleep simetime. You don't - and if he's sleeping, he's in an extended rest, which means he probably didn't bother to heal up beforehand. Save back some nice daily power with a good, solid [W] attached to it, wait until an opportune moment, and coup de gras him while he sleeps. Hey - being trapped in a haversack by someone you thought was a friend - that can leave a guy a little unhinged, yah? Throw the resulting corpse in the haversack, throw the haversack in your own backpack, and claim ignorance when everybody else wakes up. Preferably, run the coup de gras attempt solo with your DM. The other players don't actually know that anything happened unless one of them wakes up. If he wants to generate another character, let him. It is highly likely that anyone immature enough to lock someone in a haversack will have some distinctive roleplaying habits - always playing the same classes, or races, or personality types, or whatever. By now, it is moderately likely that you know what those will be. Inform the DM (before you kill the character the first time) that you've developed a psychotic, murderous, paranoid hatred of [character type]. Try to make it as specific as you can, while still hitting dead center in his character habits. If he rolls up another one, play it cool until an appropriate moment, then repeat. sell any magical gear that his characters start with cheaply to folks that won't ask questions (again, work this out solo with the DMs) and dispose of the bodies in any way that you can come across that will dispose of them appropriately. After a while, you can let your general hostility towards the type start to leak through in RP.

Decide for yourself if you want the character to go out in a blaze of glory once the other PCs figure out what he's been doing, or if you want him to recover from his traumatic experience over time.

"Yeah. I don't know what it is, but wizards just don't last long in this party. Suits me fine."

Rip it open.

Yes, you will probably die, but since its a party member doing this, (and you are one amazing character) it will probably hurt him more than you. Also, have your new character be a weak support guy that will die in every encounter.

It shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. A warforged should be plenty strong enough to rip through a single bag, even if he didn't have any cutting utensils on him (which I'm sure you did).

Step 1: Cut out.
Step 2: Freedom. Bag is destroyed, which is enough punishment for the offending character.
Step 3: Profit!

The real issue here is that this is just a symptom of a bigger problem. A player who justifies his characters imprisoning other characters (even with such an impractical solution as this) is one which will only cause similar problems in the future. You haven't solved the problem.
