| #1Kensan_OniSep 08, 2009 13:53:53 | So, I was walking to the store, and I was thinking to myself "You know, the one thing I liked about the Blizzard Spinoff books for the D&D line under 3E was the Paladin. I still think that the Aura mechanic was neat. I wonder if I can do that under 4E?" ... and there we go. I am not sure which way to go with this idea under 4E. I'm not sure there is enough powers like what I am looking for to pull it off. Would you care to brainstorm a little of it for me?
Requirments of Character: All powers need to be able to be themed as coming from the characters "Aura". That means that Stances and Bursts centering on the character should be the standard way for this character to do things. -At Wills will need to either be burst 1's or as Blasts, so that it can all still be connected closely - I'd like to see this built as a Controller-styled class, but I'm open to whatever - It doesn't have to be holy. I can be a Sludge Aura Mancer fo all that it maters. I just want to be in close, and bursting an aura around me. ... Do you think this is possible under the edition, or am I going to have to make a class? I'm open to multiclassing and Hybriding to make it work. |

But I don't want an OPTIMIZED character... or more specifically I don't want to be told by the Char Op's people that this is a stupid Idea, you can do it better if you do THIS!... I KNOW it's a stupid idea. I don't want to be talked out of the stupid Idea. I just would like to know how other people might go about doing it. |
| #4pbnSep 08, 2009 18:11:46 | I've fleshed a few ideas through there, and have not had that response. they know their stuff, and are usually happy to help . It's a mini-game for some :D |
| #5NovacatSep 09, 2009 2:09:09 | Many of the folks at the CharOp boards have had their fill with "make the best X class character" exercises. It's totally normal to present to them the challenge of "make my character good with X, Y, and Z guidelines." In 3.5, I've seen "Pimp my Commoner" threads, "Best single-class Bard" threads, and the occasional "First Level Characters that can B-tch-slap Kord" thread. They like being given an inherently poor character concept to work with (and yours is not even inherently poor). |

I seriously doubt you're going to manage to create something that does only what you're talking about, but a close burst/blast themed character should be possible to some extent. I'm thinking you probably want to go hybrid since that will give you the most variety of powers to access and the issue is really just going to be digging up a good selection of powers for your theme. I'm just guessing, but I'd put Sorcerer, Paladin, and Cleric high on my list to look at first. They may not turn out to be the best, but just going off the top of my head Sorcerer does have an at-will close blast and a number of close burst/blast encounter powers. Cleric definitely has a pretty good wealth of close burst stuff, though nothing in the at-will department. Overall I think at-wills are going to be the hardest part. I think the only combo I can think of off the top of my head that would give you both at-wills as close blast would be Sorcerer|Wizard. |

| #8soel_griffinSep 10, 2009 6:34:48 | This sounds like an excellent idea for a brand new class. |
| #9TDarienSep 10, 2009 11:13:34 | This concept screams invoker to me. They have a lot of close powers, and you can obviously reflavor everything as you see fit. |
