I have a (very) quick question:

I picked Two-Weapon Fighting as a feat at 3rd level.
Now, I'm prestige classing in Dread Pirate (Complete Adventurer) and this would grant me Two-Weapon Fighting.

Seeing as I allready have it, would it grant me Improved 2W Fighting instead, or?
There is no mention of this in the book, so I'm a little stuck.

Feb 18, 2012 11:44:20 I don't think there are rules for this. Every time it has happened I've asked my DM if I could simply pick up a different feat instead of the bonus feat I'd be getting for the 2nd time. All 3 DMs I've had that happen with have agreed to that.

Usually Prestige Classes are rich in a certain "flavour". However, some players want to start playing by this flavour before they reach the prestige class. I imagine you picked 2 weapon fighting because you wanted to be an agile swashbuckling type, which is what the Dread Pirate is all about as well. I do not think you should be "punished" for heading towards this flavour at 3rd level already. Not giving you a different feat would be exactly that in my book, as it'd put you 1 feat behind the player who has the exact same class, but didn't feel the need to start playing within the flavour of the Dread Pirate class from an earlier level.

I'd be really surprised if your DM was against this.

I wouldn't say 'shoehorned', but retraining rules were introduced in 3e's PHB2, if memory serves.

No.

However you can petition you DM and explain things to him. Most DMs would see this as a resonable request ant allow it.

Yup - page 193 of the PHB2...

So the character could retrain out of TWF for another feat in his 3rd level slot, and then pick it up again through Dread Pirate...

The basics:

When you retrain a feat in 3.5, not only do you need to be able to currently meet the prereqs for the feat that you're retraining into, but you would have had to meet those prereqs at the level at which you took the feat that you're retraining out of. (ouch.) Any feat he takes in place of TWF, he would need to have been able to meet the prereqs for it at 3rd level.

Which precludes him from using that slot to pick up Improved TWF, unfortunately. I'd pick up Weapon Focus if he doesn't already have it. (Can't really think of too many other no-brainer feats that he'd meet the prereqs for at 3rd level.)

Although, to be honest, I'd ask the DM if he/she'd be willing to houserule on it and let the character pick up ITWF instead of just getting stuck with picking some other feat.
