Please bear with me as I explain my situation; I like to explain things thoroughly and it is mildly entertaining, at least.

I've been a gamer for a long time. To specify 'long': long enough to watch everyone in my area that I used to game with grow up and move away to avoid unemployment & starvation (or at least move away to avoid starvation).

There are few prospects within 50 miles of starting a game that don't involve
(A) avoiding mobs of pitchfork-wielding zealots (terrible that I say this, but...Hi, grandma!) attempting to appease their version of 'The Big Guy' for someone utterance of the black-listed combination of 'D's' and an '&', or (B) attempting to find players in a bar booming with country music so loud you literally have to have conversations wrote out on napkins (and the bars usually run out of both Jack & napkins - criminal).

I want to role-play. I don't care if it's D&D or not (preference, yes, but not necessity), if anyone can suggest a good MMORPG that's not too combat-grind heavy & is free-to-play, I'd like to look into that as well.

Does anyone have a solution to my situation?

Thanks in advance for your kind assistance. And, yes, I'm aware I need to move.

Try an online game, either of the Play by Post or Maptools variety.

There's a find gamers in your area section of this board and a few other sites that serve similar functions (only they do it better). You can also check with your local game shop. They usually run games. Finally, I've found players using craig's list. I know that sounds funny/dangerous/whatever but it actually worked and the guy is a blast to play with.

Could you list some of those online resources? I've had little luck find them on my own.

I'm trying to avoid having to drive 50+ miles to play, but I appreciate the reply about craigslist - I think I may have found something there (beside ideas for massage/dice-rolling jokes).

Have you tried PenAndPaperGames.com? They're a good resource for finding players in your area. And if you still can't, they have a lot of play-by-post games as well.

The WotC boards have a play by post section as well. With a few different play styles.

They have silly in-character freeform forum: Castle of Fun

They have a Player vs Player combat arena forum for both 3.5e and 4e: The COre COliseum

There are also forumss to play normal adventure type games: Real Adventures and PbP Haven.
