Im not exactly sure where to post this, so I figure I'll start here.

I've been playing 3.5 for quite a bit, but this wednesday my group will attempt to make the switch to 4th edition. I've read through the phb, and I'm kinda at a loss as to which class to choose and what will fit best with the rest of my fellow players. Here is some info about our group, to the best of my current knowledge:

Player 1: shardmind ardent
Player 2: ranger (most likely elf)
Player 3: rogue
Player 4: most likely a defender of some sort, possibly fighter
Player 5: interested in monk, will most likely want to be a striker or defender

And then me. That leaves the role of controller. I loved playing wizards in 3.5, so that seems like a good fit. However, there's one problem. Our DM, who has some experience with 4th edition, didn't always give us encounters with lots of enemies to control in 3.5, instead giving us 2-4 stronger enemies. I figure his style will be very similar in 4th edition, with one or maybe 2 encounters with a good number of enemies and the rest of the encounters containing a much smaller number of enemies. I realize that controls are extremely valuable with large amounts of enemies, but would a controller be useless in this situation? Is a controller even necessaryor can a party of my size live without one?

Long story short, what are some classes that will mesh well with the above party composition, while also not feeling useless given my DM's tendencies (if there are not a lot of enemies)? Is it worth it to add a second defender or leader, or maybe even yet another striker, while leaving out a controller? Is there a class besides a controller that could fit well with this party? I really enjoyed playing battlefield control wizards in 3.5, but I'd definitely like to try something new sometime. All sources are available for me to use (PHB I, II, III, AP, etc.)

Sorry for so many questions, I'm excited to start 4th edition though. Thanks in advance!

In my experience, having two defenders is always worth it.

Don't be afraid to play a wizard just because you might not get hordes of minions, controllers are more than minion control.

A cunning bard might be just the thing, lending that bit of control while being a great leader(two of something being ok, imo)

In the end, you have enough characters/roles that I'd suggest just playing whatever calls to you the most.  if that's a wizard, do it.  if not, don't.  it's more important that you like the character than that the group likes his role.
