Our next campaign will be a survival-based pvp oriented game. We will be on an island, not know where everyone else is, and have to seek them out, battle, and win. There are also npcs and monsters to encounter. I'm wondering if I could get some insight on what race/class would be best suited for this type of campaign. We are limited to the players handbook for race and class options, and the DM's guide for magic items. We are using 3.5 and will start around level 8. Let me know if you have any ideas or need any clarification.

Druid.  Take Natural Spell at 6th.  You'll win.

You are at the point of full caster dominance, so thats the route I'd take. Being on a jungle island I'd probably do druid. Generally be aware that everyone else will be rogues/archers so take spells that help you detect things.

If you wanted, wizard might not be a bad idea. If you kill another wizard you can steal his spells. If you do wizard hole up somewhere and make a giant death trap to get to you. Then you simply scry and die.

PHB only full casters really do just run the show.

To get more helpful advice, what do you want to play, what sort of character? What stat generation will you use? What sort of items can you start with?
