Should? yes, need? no.

We can help, feel free to ask specific questions that are confusing you.

'cause i really want to learn how to play the game...

Reading the player's handbook will give you the vast majority of the information needed to play the game.

and i want to meet new people...

Look around your college campus- they have geeks there. Geeks that play D&D, most likely. Most colleges have some sort of student quad where you can find out about extra-curricular activities, such as hobby groups, etc. The single most reliable way to meet people is to go where people are.

Hey MJ, that is probably all you need to buy to be a player character, at least for quite a while. Well, except dice, you will want a set of dice.

The best way to learn is to find a group that already plays, and join in. Then everything you have skimmed in the book will gel a lot quicker. I'm guessing Torrance, CA is pretty far from Cupertino, CA, but if it isn't drop me a line -- a friend is running a 4e session every other week.

If you have a local game store they will likely have people that meet there to play, and if they don't they can probably help you hook up with a group. There are also web sites like, um http://www.penandpapergames.com/ I think that have player and game registries.

Oh, one more thing you'll eventually need is a mini to put on the map for your guy. Many groups can loan you one, or let you use a pencil eraser or something for a bit, so no need to rush out and get one. Besides you need to make your character so you know if you are buying a little elf guy or a big dragon guy, or a dude in robes with a glowing staff...

Good luck, and feel free to come back and ask questions and stuff.

You could also check -- or post on -- Wizard's own player directory to find a game or more players:

Hey amigo...

What you have will serve you just fine -- though as mentioned, you will want to get some dice. You don't need any more books as a player.

A miniature is extra, too. Sort of depends on the DM. I have played and DM'ed since '79 and we still use odds and ends... minis if we have them, plastic figurines, glass pips, dice, a penny, anything. It doesn't matter what stands in for your character on the map, but if everyone has miniatures and the DM prefers it, you may want to get one. If you like 'em, great... miniatures collecting/painting can be a hobby all by itself. Just not my thing.

We didn't have a regular battle mat a couple of days ago and played on place mats with a grid pattern. Worked fine. Bushes were fluff one of the dogs had pulled out of a stuffed animal, rocks were... well, rocks... and the characters were represented with a combination of some old, beat-up miniatures and a few glass counters. And everyone had fun, which is the most important thing, and it did not detract from the game in any way... the immersion comes from the role-play and the ability to visualize the world in your mind, not on the map. The map is important, and it keeps the scene fair and manageable, but it doesn't do your imagining for you. ;)

As for warbands... unless I am missing something, a warband is just a group of characters assembled for battle. Are you talking about a brand name for something? If you mean to ask if you'll be in a warband when you play, then the answer is yes, more than likely. An adventuring group, a warband, a party... all ways to refer to the group of characters in the game who join up to achieve common goals.

Someone help me out if I'm missing something on the "warband" part of the question. ;)

I believe he's talking about D&D minis, an almost-but-not-quite-entirely different game where there is no roleplaying there are only two players managing warbands of predetermined total point values consisting of creatures of varying point values against each other. I think i covered the basic gist.

Hi Marts,
Everyone has given great advice. I just want to welcome you. I'm almost 40, and it's great to see another young people exploring a game that's brought me so much joy. Like the rest of us, you're helping to keep D&D alive. Thank you.

The only thing I might recommend is buying some index cards and noting your at-will, daily, and encounter powers on them. It helps with organizing your PC's details. You may be able to find some "fan" created cards.

Have fun and be careful with those dice around your little brother, lol ;)

Since you are new to the game I suggest you first try finding a group to play with an experienced DM (there are few experienced 4e DMs, but many who have older edition experience.) In that case you only need the players handbook, a character sheet, and some dice. Other than that all you could need is a notebook to write your ideas in and use for scrap paper. And a pencil. With a GOOD eraser. Trust me. You will NEED an eraser. A lot.

Also you might want to pick up a few capital I's. :D :P

Other than that you should be set to go.

The rules are probably going to go over his head, but hey he's 5 years old, he'll probably just be glad to be playing with you.

I'm afraid you will have to be more specific.

i want to understand how the roleplaying game goes, 'cause i already read the player's handbook... but i don't know what to do... maybe it's because i haven't been with players playing the game...

Yeah, once you see a session in action you'll pick it up pretty quickly. Best advice I can give is don't be shy.

Might want to pick up a few other systems and read the roleplaying sections. And by pick up a few other systems I mean download free PDFs, and read those. Fourth edition lists a little, but could use more. As for recruiting people, try school. The age gap between you and your brother prevents the other method where you GM for your brother and a bunch of his friends, which worked wonders for me, bringing about 13 people into the hobby. Not D&D, but roleplaying in general.

Which deluxe dice, the awesome green yellow and blue marbalizied ones from 3.5 or the nasty straight blue from 4e. Oh welcome to the game, and as a side note WE ARE ALL NEW TO 4TH EDITION LOL.
