In the thread 1001 tips or something, there were a lot of things that said to make sure you keep a dagger/thieves tools/etc hidden in your boots, in hidden pockets sewn into your clothes, or in false bottoms of your bags.

How does that work?

Do you just say, "I am sewing a false bottom into my bag,and keeping X item hidden there" or what?

Pretty much.

There aren't rules for it, so work with your DM.

Yes its mostly a dm choice, some just do the whole spot check to see said items or a minor negative to sleight of hand checks if someone attempts to steal from you. Its not a cure all to be immune to stealing or everyone in town would be doing it hehe.

The most likely setup for something like this, in my opinion, would just tack the stealth rules onto hiding an item.

Player: "i'm hiding X on my character in Y location"

the DM asks for a stealth check (makes the most sense).

you can theoretically retrieve the object at any time, though don't be surprised if the dm says it takes a move action, standard action, or, depending on the item/location, possibly even longer. Additionally, if that stealth check beats an NPC's passive perception, they don't spot it.

As a DM i'd be very hesitant to allow a player to gain any sort of in-combat advantage with this (such as combat advantage) as it would quickly be abused to all hell, but from a story standpoint, it might be useful if the players are thrown in jail/searched or something.
