I (monk 10/ fighter 1) will team up with the rogue (rogue 10/spellthief 1) on a parallel quest (other players are outside the country for a couple of weeks)

We will have to capture a sorcerer and bring him to the authority.

Is there any item that I should buy. Any strategy that would work best.

For what I know, the sorcerer is captain of a ship. I also except a minotaur bodyguard and a crew of mercenaries.

Already some idea that need to be critized ...

1- Mist, fog, or smoke, anything that would provide concealment and prevent us from becoming targets ... Is there a way to do so without being affected too ?

2- Get close and have as much AoO that is possible.

3- Use item that provoke chance of not being able to cast ... deafening, stunning or nauseating item ...

Please comment, criticize and propose new strategy !

Thank you

Ring of Invisibility for the monk, Scroll of Teleport for the Rogue. Have the Monk use Stunning Fist on the Sorcerer, then knock him out (if possible). Rogue Teleports them out.
- If you attack him in his cabin, try to Silence the area first, and remove it once he's incapacitated.

SOme items to consider is a couple of Quaal's feather tokens. Particularly the Swan boat and the anchor. They are cheap but if you capture the Sorceror on his ship then you need to escape, use the boat token to escape and use the Anchor token to anchor his ship so they can't chase after you (at least not until they release the anchor) You can also use the Fan token to either propel your own ship or to make it more difficult for his to chase you. Also you can get the Horn of Fog which duplicates an Obscuring Mist effect to make chase more difficult.

I appreciate the suggestion, but our main problem isn't the escape, it's the part between we get inside spell range and the moment the sorcerer is helpless.

Wait until the ship docks and the sailors (probably itching for shore leave) are out and about spending booty. Odds are, the sorc at some point will let his guard down in some fashion, like getting drunk at a local tavern, making him easier to nab.

Also, when it goes down, I suggest monk staples like Stunning Fist or grapple attacks. SF would work best if it connects, while grapple would require at least two checks to subdue and silence said sorc. At that point, apply subdual damage liberally until unconscious.

Do you have to capture, or can you just kill?

30cubic feet of stone,
Scroll of dimension door,
2x scroll of feather fall.

Dimension door diagonaly up from 580ft away to 580ft above the boat with the stone. The dropping time of the stone would be just under 6 seconds, and hit the boat with just under 192ft per second impact speed. Weighing 300lbs per 15cubic feet.

Start floating down on feather fall. Have the monk Dimensiondoor you back to the starting point.

Assuming your right about stone weighting 300lbs per 15cubic feet....

30 cubic feet of stone would weigh 600lbs, a dimension door spell allows you to carry your maximum load which would require that you have a strength score of 23 - thats pretty impressive at 11th level for a rogue or monk who are most likely focused in dex....

30cubic feet has dimensions of 3.1' x 3.1' x 3.1'.

Assuming you would centre the stone on the target, your target would have to move 1.6 feet in 6 seconds to avoid it.

My point? This is a wild and very convoluted way to kill someone which reminds me of watching cartoons - remember W.E. Coyote's attempts at killing road runner?

Much better to use a scroll of silence, invisibility, walk in range of silence so the sorcerer can't cast spells, grapple and use sneak attacks to deal non-lethal damage. until he's unconscious.

Reading everything posted, I think I will focus on :

1- Invisibility : to get close

2- Silence : no spell with verbal component

3- Charge him while invisible, grapple him and use stunning fist (meanwhile rogue sneak attack him)

4- If bodyguard and mercenaries come, I'll use my dimension stride boot to dimension door to 60ft then I would be able to outrun them even with an unconscious sorcerer on the back (base speed 50 ft, Run feat, 19 Str, + 20 to jump and slow fall 50ft, also have a item that grant me a climb speed).

5- Rogue will take care of the rest and get away by himself using smoke stick to cover our escape (already did that before)

6- I also tought of having "Touch of idiocy" as a oil (if possible), so that my first hit will likely damage his mental abilities. (cheap, no action wasted because applied before combat, it's all benefits)

For falling rock, I don't think I will use that because in this campaign ship are something very valuable (most likely, this one have magical enhancements)

Well, now it's up to my clever DM to mess with my carefully planned capture !

There's always poisons... Find something that'll knock him out without actually doing damage.

Qoute from SRD
You can bring along objects as long as their weight doesn’t exceed your maximum load. You may also bring one additional willing Medium or smaller creature (carrying gear or objects up to its maximum load) or its equivalent per three caster levels.

A medium creature + equipment weighs approximately 300lbs. a level 9 caster can take his maximum load, 3 medium creatures or their equivilent +maximum load. :D thats easily 600lbs.

The mage is on a boat, 600lbs of stone at that speed will go clean through the ship. You don't have to worry about hitting a single target, you can merely toast the ship.

Yes it is insane and convoluted, but not impossible, and it certainly keeps you at a range where you are unlikely to be spotted.

In my background, I specified that this guy enslaved and tortured me. I want to get close and punch him in the face. Falling rock won't provide such satisfaction.

But still, it would be a great idea in another situation.

1.6 feet won't get him out of a 5' square, though. And he didn't say to get a 30 cubic foot cube, so spread it into a flattish disc shape and stand on it.

Item to get: a Broach of Shielding since you can't use Evasion against Magic Missile. Use your superior movement to get in the sorcerer's face and Stunning Fist to put him out. Once you are in close, the sorc won't be able to use his best area effects (and you will just evade them anyway). Monks are particularly suited for taking out arcane casters because of their good saves all around, good mobility, high touch AC, Improved Evasion, and Stunning Fist. Later, you will also have Spell Resistance and the ability to D-Door once per day.
