How long do stances last?

Just a question that we (the group I'm in) have been arguing over for a long while: Just exactly how long do stance powers last? Do they last until the end of the turn after they are used? Until you're knocked prone/unconcious? Until the end of the encounter? How long is the time limit for stance powers?

They last until you end them or until you switch stances.  That is my understanding.

The upcoming rules update is, apparently, going to change them to expire when you are rendered unconscious or dead.  I think it's a horrible idea because it severely weakens stance powers, but that's the rules (and them'll be the house rules in short order).

Prior to that, Stances last until the end of the encounter, five minutes, when you activate a new stance power, or when a specific effect says you end it.

For once I agree with you, that'd be a horrible idea.
But you & I must have a vastly different idea of what weaken means.

Because if that's what the rules will truely end up saying?  {I'm betting it's not}  That's a HUGE boost.  Quite the oppisite of weak.  I'll just activate all of my stance powers at the begining of a session/day & let them all run.... Very rarely does my character ever get knocked unconcious - and with multiple stances running continuiously???  I'll be in even less danger of doing so.
And yet you'd have me believe I've been weakened??

BTW, if you think a rule is a bad one & your group agrees?  Why in the world would you continue to use it anyways?
Consider; the rules fluctuate all the time due to poor design/re-design by the developers.  So if the rules are going to change anyways, why shouldn't they change to whatever your group prefers?

The 'unconsciousness or death' rule is in addition to all the other conditions, not instead of.

Looking back at my post, I did not make that clear.

i had thought that "unconscious or death" was already a part of stance powers ending conditions.

Either way, it will be now, so:

if the stance is an at-will (like knight/slayer stances) they last until you are knocked unconscious (including death :rolleyes or until you change them.

If the stance is NOT an at-will power, they last until you are knocked unconscious, change stances, or the end of the encounter.

It IS quite feasible to activate an at-will stance at the beginning of the day (and suggested as far as the essentials at-will stances are concerned) and leave it running all day, only taking actions to change stances at need, or reactivate after going unconscious.

also, reminder, you can only have one stance active at a time CCS.

Yes, that's what I'm used to and just assume to be the basic rule.

But I haven't read any of the essentials or Red Box stuff (nor am I going to) & I don't use the CB.  Continiously checking for erratta is also not my hobby....
So if it had changed to something really stupid & maybe I could activate multiple stances?  I could go a very long time without ever knowing about it.  (Though I would {& since have} look up something that seemed to-good-to-be-true)

Stances are amongst the strongest in the game (rain of steel, spitting cobra, ect).  I don't see this as any way unbalancing.
