How much loot should I have?

I didn't know whether this made more sense here, or in the DM section, but it is regarding my character, so I figured I'd try here.

I am creating a level 14 character for a new group I just joined. I am using the Character Builder, but I'm having a tough time understanding if I'm doing it right, and I want to make sure the character I show up with is fair.

At first, I just hit the auto calculate gold function (I don't recall the exact name, and I'm at work, sorry.) It said I am entitled to 17,000gp, which I thought seemed pretty low for a level 14 character. The sidebar explained a little further, and I tried the autobuy function after setting my gp back to 0. So it stocked me with items that were fairly nice and reset the gp to 17,000. However, the price on the equipment says 0gp.

So can I not sell any of it? Even at reduced prices? Or can I use that add functionality to just choose what I want and ignore all the auto stuff?

If I ignore the auto functionality, is this line of thinking correct for my total loot:

17,000gp
4 magic items, including 1 level 12, 1 level 13, 1 level 14, and 1 level 15, regardless of price

Again, sorry if this isn't the best section. I kwow it's a question better answered by a DM, but he basically gave me free reign to create my character as long as it's legal, and I want to make it as fair as possible. (He's already a pretty powerful Wizard/Swordmage multiclass, so I don't want to push it.)

TIA.

Close

3 Magic items, one a level above, one at your level, and one a level below.

Also enough GP for one item of your level.

So for a lvl 14 character you'd get

lvl 15
lvl 14
lvl 13

17,000 GP

You can buy anything you want with that gold.

It's usually a good idea to use your 3 items for weapon/armour/neck slots, and your money on a bunch of lower level things.

This sort of thing is why automated character sheets/builders suck. If you have a laptop or your desktop in the same room and you need an NPC with class levels on the fly for some reason, then they can be handy. For building PCs, though, use paper and pencil. It's SO much less of a headache, and it'll probably wind up being faster, too.

Heh, no way. I can tell you with absolute certainty, if I didn't have the CB to build this character, it would never be done. It's not even done now and I've been working on it since last Saturday. Thankfully I'm off work until Tuesday now, since I'll need him Monday night.

Of course the DM just e-mailed me last night to tell me he thinks he's going to wind up TPKing the party this week. LoL.

Ask your DM how much loot you should have.

Yes thank you so much.

Actually he told me to check in the DMG for what I should have and choose it myself. Trust me I wouldn't have asked here if there were a better option.

Just double checking and making sure that you had covered that route! :D

I will add that any mundane items on the PHB tables (within reason) are simply "free" when starting at above first level.

If you want a full adventurer's kit, a climber's kit, 10 Sunrods, an everburning torch, thieves' tools, 300 arrows, whatever; it's all free.

The 17,000 you have is for miscellaneous magic items like potions, lower level items to fill slots you don't get to with your 3 "real" item grants, spell components and ritual books/scrolls, and a little bit for savings.

Generally things like 10,000gp boats would fall as being not "within reason" so that sort of thing would be a DM question. "Within reason" also would tend to include not taking tons of unnecessary mundane items for the express purpose of selling them once the game starts to cash in extra money.
