#1 virusx999 Jun 24, 2012 20:06:09	So, I managed to get my hands on a black dragon egg. I intend to train it, and use it as a pet.  The thing is, it takes forever for them to become old enough to be effective combat material. So, what I'd like to know is if there's a ritual, or spell, or even potion to help the aging process of my dragon. Any ideas out there?

When you come back, 50 years will have gone by, and your dragon will be ready for house training. Take another visit to the feywild for a year. When you come back, another 50 years will have gone by, and your dragon will be a suitable mount.

#5 MrCustomer Jun 25, 2012 12:14:44	What you need is: 1 Black Dragon Egg    1 cup torn baby spinach leaves 1 cup diced dire boar, cooked  1/8 teaspoon ground bat guano 1 1/2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 teaspoon onion powder   sulfur and pepper to taste Directions: In a bowl, beat the eggs, and stir in the baby spinach and Parmesan cheese. Season with onion powder, bat guano, sulfur, and pepper.    In a small skillet coated with a Grease spell, over molen lava, cook the egg mixture about 3 minutes, until partially set, add the diced dire boar. Flip with a spatula, and continue cooking 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce heat to low, and continue cooking 2 to 3 minutes, or to desired doneness.
#6 Krusk Jun 25, 2012 16:32:08	There aren't really rules for this. You could get into the planar shepard prestige class and make time pass at a 1-10  ratio for you in comparison to the outside world. I mean, everyone you know will probably be dead, but the dragon will age?
#7 mousewithchainsaw Jun 25, 2012 16:44:18	Regardless dragons are born with int higher then average human so you wont be getting a mindless winged mount thats spewing acid upon your foes. You need to give it lots of treasure and praise and at best you end up with a good friend that will help you out when he wishes to. That being said there is few spells and monster abilities out there that do age targets, ghost being one of them but that might just be 2nd ed. But heck if your dm is nice (or foolish) enough to let you have a dragon in the first place Im sure he will be nice (or foolish) enough to give you potions that age the drinker 10d10 years or so. And if your really lucky and he doesnt know dragons well you might get that mindless slave that can be trained like a house puppy ;)

And don't take this the wrong way, but asking "if there's [a rule] for this" sounds like you're trying to be a munchkin. Now I don't know you and I might very well be wrong, but if your DM wants you to have a trained black dragon he'll give you the required ingredients. If he doesn't, then he won't. Simple as that. You can't push some item or ritual in a sourcebook under his nose to get your way.
#9 sorbeth2 Jul 07, 2012 12:56:14	That dragon egg could well be one lovely giant plot hook, daddy or mommy may come calling to take it off your hands (or to make sure you are tending it/the hatchling properly or cultists may come attacking the party for the egg.  One of the dragon magazines a while back discussed the perils of wyrlmling tending, which can be a rough gig even with good aligned dragons.  Also depending on what your DM is up to it can take quite a while for an egg to hatch and may need some specific conditions to remain viable. Sit down with yourself and figure out what your goals are (without overpowering things) then sit down with the DM and talk about a range of goals regarding the dragon egg.  You may want to dig up the dragon issue about fostering a wyrmling and you may want to read through the draconomicon about it and use in a campaign.  You may wind up wanting to take a leadership or draconic cohort feat; there are also other feats that may be useful for working with a dragon. You didn't note which edition you are on, but I'm going to run with 3.x.  A black dragon wyrmling, IIRC, is ECL 7 (and evil) from fairly shortly out of the shell.  You may need to rethink the riding a dragon concept since if your PC is medium size you’d probably need to wait until it was a young adult at which point it has 16 hit die and probably shouldn't be in the party unless you are into epic levels anyway.  However a wyrmling dragon can be a pile of nasty for an enemy and more so as they grow.    There are also several variations on how to grow a dragon that is off adventuring, one in dragon magazine and one in the draconomicon.  Of course you may run the risk of the dragon (evil type by nature remember) becoming powerful enough to be a threat later... . What is your PC's level and how high a level do you expect to get?  Assuming the party hangs onto the egg long enough for it to hatch you may be able to have a lot of fun with the wyrmling even as things stand.
#10 kegdrainer Aug 01, 2012 20:30:48	I concur with what sorbeth2 said.  In 1st and 2nd edition, the old Haste spell did wonders for aging a dragon as when you are hasted, you age a year.  A few casting would get the dragon to the size you wnated.  Now depending on the DM, they might age the Dragon but not give it the experence in say magic casting or fighting. The body is that old but not the mind.
#11 DNDTable Aug 08, 2012 18:49:33	Ask your dungeon master his words are the rules and he creates the adventures. He might get tipsy with you getting directions from people not playing in the group.

The body is that old but not the mind.     That was a common abuse of the Haste spell. Casting Haste magically aged the caster a year, due to the stress placed upon his body by the spell.  The recipient of the spell, caster or otherwise, does not actually live a year during the duration of the spell - - fortunately, since he would be dead of starvation long before the spell ran out.  Casting Haste on the egg wouldn't do a thing, except possibly speed up the gestation by a few minutes.
