I think the Dm has Gone MAD, MAD I TELL YOU |
| #2illravenMay 22, 2009 17:51:47 | Well I know my DM does not like the Summon spells (but they do have there uses at times) do to he feels that it makes the encounters have more work for him... Your DM isn't crazy; he is a lazy git. ![]() |
| #3sallaMay 22, 2009 17:54:52 | Your DM isn't crazy. Summon spells ARE a colossal pain in the butt. |
| #4MechaliburMay 22, 2009 18:03:26 | Your DM isn't crazy, he's just a control freak. Next I bet he'll be the alignment police. He does know alignment isn't really supposed to mean much in 4e, right? |
| #5sallaMay 22, 2009 18:11:19 | Your DM isn't crazy, he's just a control freak. Next I bet he'll be the alignment police. With the reference to a 'will check' and alignment, I was assuming 3rd Edition (where summons really did suck hard). |

Summoning spells are in 4e, the summon monster line is 3e. ---------------------------------- Though I have no problem with summoned monsters when I DM, as I like to have large groups on both sides of the battle, I can see why he'd implement some houserules about them. The particular houserule you mentioned makes little to no sense, but I don't fault the idea of not-so-automatic control of summoned creatures. |

Have on a sheet of paper or index card the combat statistics of monsters you regularly summon. Also have monsters you don't regularly summon but think you might one day. Choose at most three for each spell level and only summon those monsters. Play the monsters. |
| #8revan54115110May 22, 2009 18:51:07 | the game is being played in the 3.5 rules |
| #9MechaliburMay 22, 2009 19:42:54 | Okay, I get that it's 3rd now, only one poster had to say it ![]() Alignment polices are even worse in 3.5. A DM might go to the level where they strip a paladin of his/her powers because of acting somewhat chaotic. Either way, your DM is going to far. Especially since what he's doing, ironically, makes the whole summoning system even more difficult and a pain in the butt. Although I actually liked 3.5 summons; being able to chose which monster to summon was always fun. Only allowing you to summon ones of your alignment safely takes that away. |
| #10revan54115110May 22, 2009 20:13:08 | well i will try talking to him and recommend the pick 3 or 4 monsters per spell then as the campaign goes on if more monsters show up if my I get a high roll in the knowledge of the creature i can add it to my summon list or do some more research with the help of other spell casters. |
| #11jutterMay 23, 2009 10:43:13 | I have a PDF with the statistics from all creatures from the summon monster and summon nature's ally spells (v3.5 core creatures only). In the 'new' DMG2 stat-block format. If you PM me your e-mail address, I'll send it to you by mail. |

That is an excellent idea, and I'm ashamed I never thought of it. Next time I run a 3e game with magic users, I will keep that in mind. Thanks. |
