I'm in a bit of a situation in our current campaign. One of my party has been captured. He is bound and gagged and will very soon be murdered if we cant figure out how to find him. Hes an Eladrin ranger and I am his brother, an Eladrin wizard. Is there any way the he could trance and contact me, perhaps giving me his location? Or could I use my familiar to do so...? Any help is appreciated.

What's your familiar? I don't quite remember rules about them, but if you have like a dog or something you can have your familiar try and track down your brother, I don't think you can Trance to him unless your DM Houserules it in

As a Wizard you should have rituals? Which ones do you have? A Sending Ritual would be most useful in this situation

You could also try Animal Messenger, then follow the messenger after you send it off if you're not high enough level for Sending or just don't want to (or can't) pay for someone else.

You could also see if your DM will allow a skill challenge with Diplomacy (asking officials), Streetwise (asking around on the streets), Bluff (trying to appear as though you're part of the kidnapper's group and get inside info), Intimidate (same as Bluff but kidnapping and threatening a member of the enemy group), and/or Stealth (shadowing someone from the group back to their hide-out).

Another trick might be to try to get yourself captured in the same way, then fight your way out since you'll be able to use your powers without gear.

You may also want to check with the other players in your group to see if they have any rituals, powers, or ideas that might help.

Animal Messenger won't help since you need to specify the location along with the recipient.  Your familiar would not likely be much help either.  Assuming that you do have one that can range further than 20 squares from you, it wouldn't be any better than you are at finding someone since it uses your skill modifiers, and would be just as clueless as to where to start. So at best, you'd have an additional creature searching.

Sending would be the most immediately use ritual, though there's no guarantee that your character's brother knows where he is.  Though divination rituals like Consult Mystic Sages and Consult Oracle could also help depending on the exact nature of the situation.

Barring access to those rituals, however, will probably be mundane skill checks as suggested above.

I was just thinking that - if he's bound and gagged but not blindfolded... he still has line of sight.  Teleporting gets you out of restrains.  Fey step.

think it comes down to the motivation of the kidnappers. if they just wanted your brother dead he'd be dead.

i'd follow up on the suggestions given by TheAbstruseOne, of just old fashioned detective work. the motive should provide leads to associates and those associates probably could lead to your brother. then there's always the option of getting their attention instead. depending on what they're after, you may be able to let them know you've got something worth bargining for.

besides, i don't imagine the DM is going to make sorting it out as easy as having your wizard mumble a few words.
