| #1arcana_manApr 26, 2009 23:01:44 | Okay so im playing a simple barbarian... except he is a tuff dwarf... very tuff. My goal for the character is to become a legendary tough dwarf amongst my people. So i was searching for ways to get a high HP score mainly...I used pointbuy to get 18 CON, also im a dwarf for +2 con ... the magic items i have my eyes drilled on are the amulet of HP +6 and a manuel of vitality +5 and i think i seen a orb that increases my con by 2 in the DM's guide.. but i was trying to find out other ways to increase my hp threw enchantments and magic items ect. i know that inherent bonuses dont stack... such as a wish spell ability score bonus and a manuel of vitality.... but do enchantment bonuses stack... mayby a permancy spell with bears endurance stacking with +6 CON amulet. What other ways will i be able to increase my hp... Im currently lvl 9 in a 3.5 campaign but i recently got flung 1000 years into the past so mayby for the time being i can find a old magic item that is in 2nd eddition but not in 3.5 that will increase my HP .... my wealth is currently 10,000 i only spent like 90 gold on my character ... im hoarding it...after i get to a town to sell my wares i might make 1 or 2 thousand... we got lots of loot but our party is of like 6 players... never enough treasure to go around... at lvl 9 barbarian my hp rolls are below average but not teardrop low... not anymore.... but all my feats are toughness and my CON right now is 22 my HP is at 122 A list of what stacks and things that increase my HP would be very apreciated I feel really weak.. im investing all my stuff into hp but there is another barbarian ... who is also part paladin... he got lucky on his stat rolls and hp rolls... he makes me feel useless... its a bummer.. i have 14 str but his is like 20... i want to atleast beat him in 1 thing... HP... he has 20 str and 119 hp on top of that he can cast cure light wounds... so he baught a wand of cure light wounds... so he is almost as tuff as me ..waay stronger.. and has practicly endless heals.... man i feel useless... PS my heart sank wen i rolled a 1 on my hp roll for my barbarian... then a 2... then a 3... then a 4......low hp rolls suck Also are there any character builds that make for a hugh amount of HP at lvl 20 |
| #2AlanBruceApr 27, 2009 1:05:00 | Having 122 HP at level 9 is not something that could be considered weak. I would swap all those Toughness feats for a single Imp. Toughness and then focus on optimizing your combat abilities (weapon focus, for example). Having a strength score of 14 isn't that bad, considering it will be 18 when you're raging. I'm assuming you are in possesion of magic weapons by now, so you should be hitting quite often in combat. You are essentially the proverbial Meatshield, with a cleric nearby to heal your 100 + HP, going down in combat through melee should not be an issue. |
| #3borrisApr 27, 2009 1:23:03 | Improved Toughness is a must have, increasing your hp total by a number equal to your HD, effectively giving you hp as if your Con was 2 points higher. Toughness is not worth being taken even once, though. With only 3 hp, even at mid levels, it's only one third as good as Improved Toughness, and I'm sure you wouldn't take a feat that gives a +1 bonus to a save or a skill even if it did stack with Great Fortitude or Skill Focus. It's really only worth it for 1st-level NPCs the Dm wants to see survive more than one hit. |
| #4sallaApr 27, 2009 1:29:58 | but there is another barbarian ... who is also part paladin Wait wait wait wait. Full stop, full freakin' stop. Unless there's houserules in play, this doesn't work. Barbarians can't be Lawful, and Paladins have to be Lawful Good in 3rd Edition. He's either losing his barbarian rage, or just about EVERYTHING from his Paladin levels. |
| #5korgoththepristApr 27, 2009 1:45:22 | a barbian cant be lawful but he can be netural So he cant be a barbian / Paladin in 3rd. hes loseing abilitys from one or another inless your playing by some special rules and such like Gasalt or something with a twist or w/e THAT AND You just admited your rolls a below adverage but not by much (Meaning you got a 5.5 / 4.5 on each dice result insteed of 6.5 if you get my math/adverability) and he rolled good. MEANING he got ABOVE Adverage and such on his rolls. meaning he got like 7.5/8.5 HP on his rolls. So h es getting twice better on the dice roll as you possibly overall. AND you still beat him on HP dont feel bad your rolls are the only thing realy beating you up That and im a paladin lover there not bad ... but trust me he cant be a paladin/barbian inless theres a special houserule in effect. Barbians can not be any Lawful (Meaning something like CG or NG or CN or TN) And paladins HAVE to be LAWFUL Good. Eather one class ability or the other should be gone. |
| #6korgoththepristApr 27, 2009 1:47:30 | allso if you want to be a jackass you can give your self a hot potato of healing right now for your barbian and have the spell heal be casted on you 1 per round for free XD Kinda costly might want to think about makeing it race aligment restricted and such IF your allowed to make your own items that is ... |
| #7oxybeApr 27, 2009 9:33:51 | if he's using the Paladin of Freedom variant from UA, it's totally legit Barb/Pally that probably won't loose much. |
| #8arcana_manApr 27, 2009 9:38:23 | He is not a crossclass of barbarian/paladin... he is a Barbarian with a prestige class from the Exalted deeds book called champion of somththing.. i think.. i dont have the book in front of me. But eh forget it im not really getting anything useful out of this thread from anybody |

But eh forget it im not really getting anything useful out of this thread from anybody You probably mean the Champion of Gwynharyf (spelling needed), an exalted barbarian who can use some paladin powers, yet CG all the way. Regarding your HP problem, why don't you ask your DM to allow to you use the average hp rolls found in the DMG. You mentioned rolling 1's and 2's, which is never a good thing, especially when you have a possible 12 HP to gain from each roll, so that book offers a healthy alternative (if i'm not mistaken, you get 6 hp at every even level and 7 at each odd). So let's do the math , factoring Improved Toughness into the mix: 12 (level 1 max HP) + 24 (levels 2,4,6, and 8 average hp) + 28 (levels 3,5,7, and 9 average HP) + 54 (Constitution bonus 6hp/level) + 9 IImp. Toughness)= 127 HP and that's leaving you 3 Toughness feats that you may want for overkill if you want to beat the other barbarian in the meatshield dept., which would leave you with 136, but there are magic items and spells that could achieve that as well. |
| #10arcana_manApr 28, 2009 3:08:39 | I looked through the DMG. and I am not able to find it. what page is it on |
| #11AlanBruceApr 28, 2009 9:58:08 | I looked through the DMG. and I am not able to find it. what page is it on I haven't looked at that book in a long while, but if I had to guess, I'd say check either pages 135 or 198 (one gives you average wealth/level, while the other one should give you average HP for each class). I'm sure somebody here must have that book handy and can give you a more accurate answer, though. |
| #12arcana_manApr 28, 2009 10:31:11 | Thanks i found it.. ill ask my DM if he will alow it... aside from that what magic items can i quest for to increase my hp... like i stated erlier aside from +6 con amulet/manuel of vitality +5/ and i think some orb for +2 con... what other magic items will increase me HP... and i was also wondering what effects stack and which dont... for example the inherent bonus from manuel of vitality does not stack with wish spells for ability increases... do enchantment bonuses stack? |

Simple rule: If the bonuses have the same type, they don't stack. So, enhancement bonuses don't stack, inherent bonuses don't stack. The only exceptions are dodge bonuses, untyped bonuses, and circumstance bonuses from different circumstances. |
| #14Arcane_GuyverApr 28, 2009 14:32:18 | You'll want to look at other abilities from magic items to make your dwarf tougher, not just "MOAR HPZ!" Try Regeneration (pearly white Ioun stone), Energy Resistance (ring of energy resistance / ring of universal energy resistance) & Spell Resistance (spell resistance armor). I would've recommended some DR as well, but barbs get that as a class feature. ![]() You might also enjoy ignoring and shaking off negative levels easier; if so, invest three feats into Endurance, Enduring Life, and Lasting Life (the latter two are found in both Libris Mortis and Expedition to Castle Ravenloft). |
| #15Elemental_ElfApr 28, 2009 15:19:32 | It's quite honestly madness to roll for HP. It's no fun being a front line guy and having a low HP. I think you should have a convo with your DM about that. As for ways for your character to shine... Have you yourself considered multi-classing? Maybe take levels in the Beastmaster PrC from the Complete Adventurer? That way you'd get an Animal Companion, which will allow you to make more attacks per round and improve your combat prowess.Maybe take levels in Rogue and flank with your Barbarian friend and deal extra damage? Perhaps take levels in Scout and focus on moving around and hitting things, i.e. become a true raging barbarian. You could do the same thing with Highland Stalker, which would keep your BAB up. Maybe take a level in Bard and use Bardic Knowledge every chance you get (that way you have a chance to be the center of attention for knowledge checks). |
