I just sat and leveled up my Character for our next session, and I stumbled upon a new term in the DnD Character Builder (or possibly not that new), something called 'Inherent Bonuses'. I haven't noticed it before, so that's why it seems new to me. What exactly are they? How do they work? Is it just an alternate way of letting the players gain that +1 per half tier bonus to attack, defenses and damage? And in that case, how many stats are affected?

From what I understand, it's essentially for DMs who are not fond of giving out many magic items.

The system is described in the DMG2. It's a way of giving PCs appropriate enhancement bonuses to attacks and defenses if magic items will be scarce or unused, although the system also incorporates other reward mechanisms such as boons.

IIRC, you get a +1 bonus to attack at Levels 2, 7, etc. and a +1 bonus to all defenses at L4, 9, etc.

It's an enhancement bonus, so it won't stack with any magic items you happen to find or create.
