Intercepting Attacks (3.5)

Jun 18, 2009 13:22:47 I did a search and nothing specific came back (if I missed it I apologize).

Anyway, in 3.5 is it possible to intercept an attack meant for someone else? or is aid another the only option?

In this particular scenario the caster was being beat on, and the fighter was in an adjacent square. The initiative order was Fighter, Caster, Bad Guy.

Jun 18, 2009 13:54:27 I think there might be some Tome of Battle maneuvers to do that (Shield Block being the one that immediately comes to mind), but otherwise, I don't know.

-IIRC, Knights (PHB II) have an ability that can do that.
-Couple spells in that same vain (I've seen Benign Transposition used to that effect very well).
-Couple of prestige classes have defender-esque abilities like this. There was a defender one IIRC, in Sword & Fist I believe. That fit the bill well. Daijoi Bodyguard (Oriental Adventures)? Etc.
-Easiest; Readied Action w/ a Free action to the charge you wish to protect to let him know, "Hey, you might want to Ready one yourself, or Delay." Enemy attacks, you leap into the forray, etc.
Or, enemy attacks, your Readied Action triggers, hopefully something you do that prevents him from even attacking 'x' (grapple, trip, disarm, whatever).

Kinda curious how people would rule that situation as a DM as well.

I mean in the grand scheme of things taking a little damage for a friend might not be that big of deal. But movies and books a like are littered with similar cases where a person takes the hit for another. Sometimes this results in death, others just wounded. Anyway, just some food for thought.

Jun 18, 2009 15:14:16 You could just bull rush the caster out of the way. Bull rush doesn't do any damage after all. Though you'll provoke an AoO that way :P
