This topic is for posting and/or critiquing new ideas for magic items or non-magical items. When you post a new item, please format it like they are in the DMB. Also, if you can mention the edition before your item, that would help.

If this works, it will be a boon to many a player looking for a clever item.

This is something from my own 4E homebrew game, a special item designed to help explain how lower-level mooks could still complete rituals and be made useful for more than just meat-shields:

Knowledge Flask Level 8 Consumable
A small portion of a spellcaster's mental acuity is sealed into a stoppered bottle, stored for later use.
A knowledge flask is a special item designed to aid with a ritual. By adding the knowledge flask to the ritual's components (it doesn't count toward the ritual component cost), you can use the skill check contained within the flask as a substitute to your own check. You can also use the skill check you make with the ritual if it's higher, but the knowledge flask is still expended.

I also have a ritual, but I don't have the books in front of me, so I can't list out the component costs.

Create Knowledge Flask Level 8 Ritual
You extract your own knowledge from the depths of your mind, sealing it inside a flask in case of emergency.
Casting time: 10 minutes Skill: any skill that can be used in a ritual
Upon completion of this ritual, you make a skill check. That check result can then be stored within any bottle, flask, or jar that can be sealed or stoppered. You can choose to interrupt the ritual after making this check, not expending any component costs, if you decide the check is too low.

Parrot of Magical Carnage

Description: A brilliant red & blue crested avian stands before you, eyeing people in the general vacinity with exceptional mistrust.

Benefit: When fed this creature perches upon the shoulder of the closest spellcaster. The creature benefits from the saves and non combat feats of the person it perches upon, as well as is protected by any spell, spell-like, supernatural, or extroadinary ability that it's companion casts or has another has cast upon them (of which doesn't change the creature's type, or form). It has 50 HP, of which if spent, the creature explodes in a puff of multi-hued feathers. It cannot be commanded to leave the shoulder of it's new companion, nor to aid in melee combat.

As long as it receives a small biscuit each day, any non-silent spell the companion of the bird casts is subject to a 20% chance of being affected by the Twin Spell feat (ref. Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting). This effect does not increase the spell's level, nor effective caster level.

Whilst having the creature in possession, the 'owner' suffers -2 to diplomacy, intimidate, listen, move silently, spot, hide and bluff checks ... but receives +2 to gather information.
