OK so I played my first tabletop game last night. Was a bit boring but went ok.(Played the basic game campaign.)
We were confused though when it came to spells though because I was sure you didnt just roll a d20 and add your int or wisdom. Also AoO, they don't roll straight to damage do they?

Stick with it. It gets better as you go along. Right now you're trying to understand the rules as much as anything else.

You don't. While some spells do require an attack roll, a spellcaster's primary ability modifier (INT for Wizards, WIS for divine prepared casters, CHA for most spontaneous casting classes) has nothing to do with such rolls. Instead, having a high INT/WIS/CHA makes their spells harder to resist by increasing the Difficulty Class (DC) of the saving throw.

Also AoO, they don't roll straight to damage do they?

I'm not sure what you're asking. An attack of opportunity is a melee attack that does the same damage as any other attack made with the same weapon. If your fighter is using a longsword that does 1d8+2 points of damage, ALL of his attacks - AoO or otherwise - will do 1d8+2 points of damage.

An AoO works like this:
Character provokes AoO.
Attacking character makes an attack roll.
If it hits, roll damage.
If it misses, nothing happens.
All characters are entitles to at least 1, but no more than that a round. Unless they have the Combat Reflexes feat.

well congrats on your first tabletop game.
As DrMorganes said, just stick with it. You will get rules down quick enough. Just read over the books that pertain your class. If you have a gaming store close by you could stop in there and ask if anyone is playing or when the next group will be and maybe they will let you join in and help teach you.

Just wondering, what class were you?
