Little time to play, a lot of time to talk.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here in the forums and I hope this is an appropriate place to create this thread. I have only had about a 3 week long experience with D&D 2e with a couple of people who introduced me to Dungeons and Dragons. I have been hooked ever since, I am going into Game Design witha  focus on Conceptual Art and I have to say Dungeons and Dragons is my favorite game and hands down is an experience I will never forget.

I recently have found myself swamped with work and I have little to no time to play games (D&D Included). However, I find myself wanting to talk about how great the game is (General Discussion, Art, etc.) and I just havn't been able to find anyone here in Chicago who wants to do so, or I am finding it hard to. So I ask the community here, would anyone like to talk about D&D's (Art Style, Gameplay, or just in general), or can you guys point me in the right direction?

I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you,

- Nick

First off, welcome to the forums.

Secondly there are a few artsy things to do here on the forums.  The first that comes to mind is the "What do you think my character looks like" thread in the Character Development section.

The only issue is your edition.  I don't mean you are doing it wrong, I mean you might find more people to talk about it elsewhere on the boards.  This area is fairly 4e centered, for better or for worse, so you might have a hard time talking 2e specifics with some people here.

That being said, the core of the game is the wonder of interactive storytelling and you can find all kinds of discussion of that nature on any of the boards here (although I would stray away from Character Optimization if I were you).

Did you have anything in particular you wanted to talk about?

Thanks for the speedy reply,

I have only played 2e, but I wanted to move into the newer editions.

I don't have specifics to talk about and I was hoping further posts may spark conversations. However, I have recently been watching Chris Perkins PAX, AI, and random D&D campaigns on Youtube. I can't seem to get enough of them, I guess it is the closest I can get to playing without actually being in the game right now, hah.

I've just within the past few months gotten back into dnd after a long hiatus.  The last edition that I played was 2e, and now I have a 4e game going.  I have to admit, it was stumbling across Chris Perkins DMing on youtube that sparked the decade or so long passion back from the brink, and I'm loving it.

I also subscribed to the dnd podcast, and there's some cool stuff there as well.  Not as fun as talking about the game, but a good knowledge-booster for sure.

You could also try play-by-post which is easy to fit in a busy schedule. (see links in my sig ;) )

Oh cool, I didn't know they had a podcast. If you can paste the link on here that would be appreciated!

I will also check out the play-by-post which you have suggested Mysteria.

Thanks for the replies!

I love the style in which Chris pushes his games and I do believe that D&D is a spectator sport. I found myself laughing out loud sometimes watching the youtube recordings. I love that feeling you get when you are creating a story and you have to improvise so you never know what comes next.

It is like a group of people have come together to right the next best Fantasy Novel. I love it.

I might even start looking into DM'ing games instead of being in them, although I love playing as a character I don't see too many DM's around. I believe that I could drive stories along.

Speaking of which, posting here made me check my links and it's sad to see that quite a few of those are dead, so I removed them from the list.

Yea I checked them out and a lot of them had postings from 2010, do they all have to deal with D&D?

These should get you started.  I listen to them on my iphone, so I just typed in "dungeons and dragons" in the store search.  There are quite a few podcasts of other people's games, but I haven't come across any that were interesting.

Real Adventures, Core Coliseum, PbP Haven and (I think) Map of the Planes are DnD. (I'm not and have never been active on map of the planes, so I'm not sure.)

By the way, you need to check the forums to see if there's activity or not, not just the blog posts. I know Real Adventures' last blog post is from a long time ago, but the forums are still active.

Thanks for the links, and I will have to check out their forums to see if any of them are still active.

Since starting this thread I have created a Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition group. We are all learning as we progress through the game and this time around I am taking a go at being the Dungeon Master. I have to say that being in the DM seat I get to unleash my creativity and all the players seem to be having a lot of fun. I created characters along side them and I have even worked to implement them into the story.

I am running two seperate campaigns with their multiple characters and I am starting them on opposite ends of the same world. So in each campaign they are hearing stories of what is going on at the other ends of the world. Both campaigns are my own creations and are mainly improvised as the players move through them.

They have already encountered a mysterious hermit who may or may not be a (Necromancer), the cleric also had to save her four friends from certain doom when they were turned to stone by cursed ashes in the hermits shack after the Rogue dropped a sacred urn and stabbed the Necromancer (who turned to ashes). Those who were covered by the ashes shortly were restricted to chairs by the energies of the dead and turned to stone.

As the floor broke beneath them the final party member (the Cleric) who had been taking the defensive end broke through the door. The floor dropped and she was forced to fight multiple skeletons on a moving platform after it fell into a dark liquid. She defeated the skeletons and figured out a way to break them from the stone and they made a quick escape before the platform fell over the dark waterfall.

That is just the first campaign the second campaign has them fighting goblins to protect the human city of "Iron Will," and to reclaim the human's lands.

If you guys want to hear anymore from my adventures please let me know!
