I have never seen a thread like this so I thought maybe I'd give it a shot.

So I've finally gotten a chance to play some D&D for the first time in a long time. I went all out creating my character and coming up with a back story. I found an awesome picture on deviantart.com that I based him off of but I realized to late that I don't have a good mini for it. I'm hoping that maybe an expert can recommend a miniature that looks like him.

The link below is the picture I found. Does anybody know of any similar looking miniatures. They do not have to be D&D minis and I'm not afraid to try my hand at repainting if I have to.

I'm not sure where you can find an exact match, but I don't think any of the current wizards one would be quite right. Try reaper mini? I've seen some that have similar wizardy-types.

This is a great thread - I have trouble too, especially with the badly "painted" plastic ones they have now. Anyone got a good suggestion for a Shadar-kai Swordmage?

for that i would prob reccomend some of the fantasy flight ones as well .. seems to fit the overall look of the race ... with a custom paint to match your skin and such.

I haven't seen much that matches closely. Here's one from Reaper that's vaguely similar Reaper. You can use their figure finder tool to look for other keywords if you like.

Maybe something like Reaper minis. I do like a lot of the Anima Tactics minis also.

So I didn't see any Anima Tactics minis that looked like my character. Maybe I missed it?

Also, are all of the reaper mini's unpainted?

yes reaper are unpainted (so are the anima ones) ...

with how that char is you will have to modify the figure some no matter which you go with if you want it close ...

the anima ones have the robe and such on several that is real close ... could bulk up an arm and leg and add a book in place of a weapon and it would be good to go ...

I just got that particular mini in the mail today, and I was utterly disappointed. It has a flat top mullet. Its horrible.

I really want that reaper mini but honestly, I was looking for minis that needed paint touch ups or a single color replaced. I don't have a painting set up to work with. I think I need to find some place that paints them for you.

How about this guy?

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/BW_Gallery/29.jpg

Blood of Vol Cultist, #29 from Blood War. He's got a rod that looks kind of like the funky sword in your picture, but he has a dagger instead of a book. He has some skulls on him too, so you have to be okay with the necromancer-y look, but he's got the nice red robe, and his hands and legs are covered by it so you can't tell that they aren't armored. If you don't like the bonded fire summoner this is the closest you'll get with D&D minis, and if you don't want to have to paint your own mini from scratch you'd better stick to DDM.

Do a little modeling of the beard and this isn't too bad

Face is covered it on this one and the hand looks like it needs a little work but not bad either.

I honestly thought of the Warforged Wizard when I looked at the picture.

Yes not human but you could be wearing a mask? ... *shrug* You could attach a book in its right hand, and the staff could possibly be made into a sword.

I have that warforged mini. I realize that his outfit is perfect. I thought about carving up his face with a scalpel to give it a human shape and repainting it, but I think I'd just mess him up.

How do you people go about attaching books and changing weapons in your mini's I don't understand. Super-glue? Where do you get Swords and Books and stuff for your minis?

You can buy weapon packs from various mini companies. As for the book, you can make one out of "green stuff" which is a 2 part model epoxy used to create and modify models. Or, you can hunt down a model with a book and cannibalize the book off it.

You can do the same for the weapon of course if you don't find one that you like in any weapon packs.

Ebay has ALOT of the old Ral Partha and Grenadier miniatures from the 70-80-90s as well as some of the more older Citadel ranges. Though myself I generally go through my several bits boxes of figures and either build one from scratch or convert and old one. I made a modron one day after walking home up my steep hill. In any case, if you have a character in mind, chances are either you can get it off ebay or from a store or off Reaper minis cause they have alot of good lookers, or, you can make your own, all i needed for a modron was a D6 (yes i know) and some plastic card from a dvd box i mangled and some hands and weaponry off some old minis. (also a steady hand and much patience from gluing ones fingers together).

Drop me an email if you have some questions.

Kudos!

For that warforged wizard, the easiest way to chang his face would be to carve the existing face completely off. Flatten out the blank spot as best you can with a Testors hobby knife.
(I say Testors rather than an X-Acto knife because the blades on the Testors knives are very bendy and thus can actually carve out rounded edges if you use them right. The X-Acto blades are better metal and won't flex at all. Plus, the Testors knives are dirt cheap so it's no problem to replace them when they break, which they do regularly.)

Then find a head that you like - making sure it's the same size as the warforged's head - on one of your other minis that you don't mind carving up, and carefully slice the face off of it, being particularly careful to cut it off in a shape that will fit neatly over the flat spot you just made on the front of the warforged's head.
If you do it right, the new face should fit snugly onto the warforged's head inside his hood like it was made that way. Trim to fit if necessary. Then place a small drop of regular model airplane glue (or superglue, although that tends to eat plastic sometimes) in the center of the flat spot and press the face into place, being careful to wipe off any excess glue around the edges of the face.

You may need to touch up the paint if you weren't careful and accidentally trimmed off something you weren't supposed to, but for the most part it should work pretty well.

As for the sword, find one on a mini that you're willing to sacrifice.
Cut both ends of the staff off of the warforged's hand, and use a small hobby drill bit to drill out a hole where the shaft of the staff would have gone through his hand.
Take the mini with the sword and slice the hand off it's arm at the wrist. Then carve away at the hand until the part where the hand was is only as thick as the diameter of the hole you drilled in the hand of the warforged.
If the pommel of the sword is thicker around than the handle of the sword, slice it off. Place a drop of glue in the hole in the hand and press the sword handle into the hole. Glue the pommel of the sword onto the opposite side of the hand.

Although I don't have that particular mini in hand right now, from the picture that was posted, I don't think there's any simple way to put a book in his other hand. That's going to require some real work. However, you may be able to carve a book off of one of your other minis and glue it onto his belt...

Swapping the face and the sword should take at most half an hour or so if it's your first time doing mini surgery.

This would probably be the cheapest, simplest, and yet most barbaric way to change a mini. Since I own these minis all ready, it will only cost me the price of a tube of airplane glue. Also, I get to say this:

"I want to take his face.... off!"

Suck it Nicholas Cage.
